And why does Mayza keep getting rocked whenever I watch him pitch? When people tell me he's a good pitcher, I always think "Really? No way".
He was one of the better relievers last season. And he was good to start this season too.
Before he went on the DL:
16 appearances, 13 IP, 2.08 ERA, 2.58 FIP, 25.5% Ks, 3.9% BBs, 1.00 WHIP, .258 BABIP
Since returning from the DL (not counting today):
7 appearances, 7 IP, 2.08 ERA, 6.81 FIP, 15.8% Ks, 15.8% BBs, 1.85 WHIP, .333 BABIP
He had a speedbumps pre-injury (3 times he allowed a run during his appearances, twice out of those 3 times he pitched less than an inning), but the rest of the time he was mostly lights out.
And now that I look at the game logs and separate things from my basic "man he's been bad lately" observations, he's actually only been
really bad in 3 of his last 4 times out.
Today: 1 IP, 3H, 1 BB, 2 ER
Last Wednesday the 22nd in Chicago: 1 IP, 1H, 0ER
Tuesday the 21st in Chicago: 1 IP, 2 H, 1BB, 1 ER
Sunday the 19th vs the Yankees: didn't record an out, gave up 2 hits and a walk along with 1 run.
But overall since he came off the DL he's just "felt" less capable out there. It's hard to glean a lot from pitch type data in the game logs, but while his velo isn't down from before the DL trip and his rates of throwing in/out of the zone or whatnot hasn't really changed, there appears to just be something about his fastball that's making it more hittable. Maybe some of it is BABIP magic and he's just getting unlucky with balls landing in play or some of that BABIP is hitters making better contact. There's no data to show hard/soft contact in Fangraphs' game logs.
Really though, all of this is just a really roundabout way to say that for like a season plus a couple months Mayza was a solid, reliable reliever. It just remains to be seen whether this is him going full pumpkin or some kind of injury layoff kink that he needs to work out and reestablish himself. Time will tell.
