I think that the manager sets the tone for the game with his lineup. Gausman sucked yesterday and that’s not Charlie’s fault, but I feel like he gets content sometimes. We got a guaranteed split in a 4 game series, let’s rest Springer. And then Chappy is not available so you have 2 regulars missing at the same time. In KC, we got the series win, let’s rest guys for the 3rd game. I understand the thinking of resting guys, I really do, but the timing is horrible. Again, Gausman sucked and that’s not the manager’s fault but I just don’t like how he handles things at all.

I get the impression most of the rest/DH days are scheduled well in advance. The idea is to modify/ease players' schedules so they stay healthy throughout the season and can hopefully be at 100% for the playoffs.

I'm ok with that kind of proactive approach to health, especially considering someone with Springer's injury history. It sucks when Chapman ends up hurt and you now have a couple starters out, but if they think what they're doing is the best option for Springer, then keeping him in the lineup just because someone else is hurt would be really dumb, wouldn't it?

Springer only being able to start like 60% of the games in CF is a problem.

Like, I get giving him a rest day here or there, but he's literally had 20+ rest days through the first 63 games of the season.

Verlander on Almost Signing with the Toronto Blue Jays

renderTimingPixel.png

Per Jeff Passan:
"Houston was at the top of the list," Verlander said. "As negotiations started going, they kind of fell off. Some other teams really started to show a lot of interest. I would say that the leader was probably Toronto. They were great. And I talked to George (Springer, his former Astros teammate now with the Blue Jays) a bunch. They were very proactive to the point that when I signed with Houston, I made sure to let them know that I appreciated it all. Ultimately, when it came down to it, Houston had the same offer. It was all kind of ballpark between them and Toronto, and New York (Yankees) was kind of always just a step behind."

Well sure, but then how would they have afforded Kikuchi???

I think the way last year went (the injury and the extended recovery where he never actually seemed particularly close to 100%) kind of necessitated a cautious approach this year. It's frustrating, but he's also a good enough hitter that having him DH a bunch isn't a big problem. My hope is that, as long as he stays healthy, they'll ramp up his playing time as the season goes along.

Really, this team is good enough and deep enough that they're almost certainly going to the playoffs. Taking out the Yankees and winning the division would be ideal, but I really feel like the most important thing is that their regulars are all playing at 100% health the day the playoffs start. If that means resting Springer a bit too much, I can leave with that.

I get the reasoning although it seems like overkill. Surely, like, 10 rest days in 63 would be enough?

It's the main reason why a 77 OPS+ guy in Tapia is on target to get 450 plate appearances and put up a -2.5 WAR. And why we're forced to carry 5 OF instead of 4.

In terms of playoffs, I'd like to win enough games to get a good seeding/matchup.

No I got that. I mean if it's a few innings after the game starts, do they let people come in late? I know some venues shutter gates so I was wondering.

Definitely.

Back in the pass days I used to show up in the 8th inning sometimes lol

Got stuck at work for one game this year and walked in mid-6th.

Yeah, I could definitely see the argument that it's overkill. But then... it's a preferable form of overkill to what we went through with Springer last year.

Good sign they don'tplan on doing the 3 catchers things when they have to go down to 13 pitchers because they're already down to 13 pitchers now

Tiedemann 4 IP, 7 K, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 3 hits, 0 runs. 79 pitches, just 45 strikes. 0.38 ERA in 5 A+ starts

Seems to have some trouble throwing strikes today. Got into some difficult spots in the 2nd and 3rd but pitched his way out of it. When you never give up any runs you have to find somewhere to get the learning opportunities I guess.

Keeping Beasley over Gage seems very odd. Gage has looked really good.

Would prefer if they DFAed Trevor Richards, even if it obviously isn't going to happen.

anyone else just catch that, after the inning ended mongomery was dipping his hand in to a unknown substance and putting it through his hair. ill think its more suspect if he starts taking his cap off and running his pitching hand through his hair

Beasley was optioned for Lawrence.

Weird to carry Lawrence over Gage in that case!

I assume they want some length for today if they need it. Lawrence has been unbelievable as a starter in AAA this year. Gage and Beasley combined for 5 innings yesterday

Yes this is exactly the reason. After burning through so many guys yesterday they wanted someone with length if needed.

Frankie Montas from the A’s would be nice. Oakland like quantity over quality so I think we could make a deal. Josh Bell from the Nats. Gives us another big bat although a RH one. We also need 1 or 2 heavy throwers in the pen. Easier said than done I know.
