It'd be nice if the Yankees could face a team above .500. I guess Houston has 42 games against under .500 though so.... lol

Ya...but teams are below 0.500 by virtue of losing to the Yankees (alot) in the beginning third of the season.

Is it time to cut ties with Merryweather? He isn’t exactly lights out and now he’s injured again. We have seen this before. I know he throws hard but is he worth keeping on the roster or time to move on?

Vladdy still hitting grounders. Sure, he had a good game, but Espinal, Springer, Kirk, Hernandez, even Gurriel and Biggio are all regularly placing hits into the outfield.

I wonder if Vladdy has a swing plane problem? The thing is it doesn't LOOK like he is having a swing plane problem, yet clearly he is. Unless he golfs it and then you get that home run. Maybe he should be lifting his swings from now on.

I think it is more of a pitch selection issue then a swing issue. He has missed hittable pitches inside the zone and then expands the zone on the outer half and rolls them over and beats them into the ground. The fact he has nobody behind him hitting worth shit for the majority of the year doesn't help either as pitchers haven't felt the need to really come at him. Teo seems to be coming along though.

I've waited a long time before saying this: why in the world is Julian Merryweather still being used? His performance is on the level of a reliever who gets released from an organization.

Because of the upside if he can stay healthy and put it together.

He was absolutely unhittable to start last season before getting hurt - was hitting 101 and was untouchable. And we're sorely lacking in those sorts of power arms in the bullpen.

He started this year throwing 96-97 and looking terrible and was showing improvement and had his velocity up to hitting 99 in recent games. And then gets hurt again.

I'll agree that it's reaching the point of needing to move on.

At this point they're better off just replacing Merryweather with Pearson. Same outlook, but much more likely to succeed.

No, he hits inside pitches pretty darn hard, actually. Most of his big games and big hits have been on inside/middle pitches. Basically so long as it isn't an outside pitch, he'll hit it.

The problem is Vladdy absolutely whiffs on outside pitches, so everyone and their mother is pitching him away. The thing is, he is perfectly capable of destroying outside pitching. We saw that early last year and on that home run he hit a few days ago. His bat does seem to hint downwards during a swing but overall it's pretty level and the swing that result in a right field home run didn't look any different from any OTHER swing that results in so many grounders.

Hmm...could be an EYE PLANE issue which would explain both his manual dexterity AND his failure to read pitches. I'll have to watch how he moves his head during a swing. The only other explanation might be that he's gone full free swing mode which has a detrimental mental effect on his swing mechanics. Someone needs to remind him it's okay to take a walk.

The hitter behind him doesn't matter because all anyone has to do is pitch away to him and he'll get himself out no prob, or he'll just hit a grounder into a DP (which I predicted at the beginning of the season and the armchair GMs laughed at. Where are they now, I wonder? Funny how they've all clammed up since then lol).

If you can’t pitch, you can’t pitch. It doesn’t matter that you throw absolute gas.
