Someone needs to tell these two that very few people can pull off this look. They are not part of this few.

Sharks fan here. I don't know that I would say that he excels against high quality shots, but playing for us, he certainly got to see a lot of them so he's well practiced in dealing with them.

For whatever reason, he seemed to do much better with us in the games where we really left him out to dry and he saw a lot of shots. He had a few games with us where he didn't see that many shots and let a few softies in. But he definitely stole a few games for us this year that we really didn't deserve to win and probably had some of his best saves of the year in our recent game vs. Florida where he was just getting pummeled.

Realistically, he's one of those fungible average goalies at best. If our organization was that confident in him, we probably don't make the Askarov trade. But also, he was going to be a UFA at the end of the year and we can't be confident that our UFA's are going to want to return to a rebuilding team, so we pretty much had to do the best deal we could for him before the trade deadline and the first team to offer us a second was gonna get that deal done. The combination of our need to do a deal and the Avs' desperate need for better goaltending made us a perfect match.

Should also be a better teammate than Georgiev.
I don't know about other Avs fans but to me it really reminds me of Varly (2013-14) from what Sharks fans have told us about Blackwood this year.

Okay, so here's how this works:

The season starts poorly, then gets worse and worse - injury news every day, goalies can't stop glue-covered beach balls. But their are rays of hope. Colton's goal scoring, the brief return of Drouin, Nuke's return, MacKinnon and Makar's point streaks. But then MacKinnon goes on a slump. Everyone gets injured again. Georgiev keeps giving up four goals or more.

Then a glimmer of hope. The comeback against the Sabres. Wedgewood arrives and plays well.

Then the Blackwood trade.

If this is a story, then here's the turning point. Now we go on an epic run, probably fighting to the bitter end to make the playoffs after one last major setback. Then we upset the top seed, fight to the limit in the second round, dominate the third, and then one last epic clash in the final.

Wood you believe it?
We are in for Avs revenge arc for sure. Starting poorly, but then trading for second coming of Roy, Landy returning and never looking back.

On topic of Blackwood, i dont know much about him, but really, at worst he wont be better than Georgiev, so it wont resolve anything, but we did not give much of a value either. I mean, Kovalenko was not all that, he still might be, but we dont have time to wait for him.

What incentive would SJ have to trade Blackwood now for a 2nd + 5th when they could easily better that simply by waiting until the deadline when prices go up and teams are desperate?
No, you're right. I was thinking about it yesterday, and realized I didn't really factor in the deadline, and Edmonton and Carolina needing a goalie and such.

I can say that I was wrong in my initial reactions, and I'm not even sure I would've taken the deal, if I was Grier. He definitely could've gotten a 1st plus at the deadline from one of those teams.

I wanted Avs to get Smith about 4 years ago, but thought he'd develop a bit more than he has.
Just happy George is gone.

Now can we toss in CDH for an upgrade at his position?

Don’t know what he said in public, but he’s told me that dressing room has the worst or lack of winning mentality he’s ever experienced at any level of hockey. There’s zero accountability and understanding of sacrifice for what it takes to win important games.
Thanks for the input. I'd be curious to see what he thinks of the Avs these days with all the changes.

Grier said that he didn't feel he was going to get a better offer than that later in the season, so he felt he had to jump on it.

I think it just depends on how they viewed Kovalenko. Since they were very high on him, this was a deal they wanted to make since you never actually know what the deadline is going to bring.

The Avs would have surely made a deal with another team had the sharks decided to wait until the TDL - that would have been 1 less suitor.

Last year Grier waited until the TDL to move Kahkonen and ended up with a Vanecek + 7th trade maybe instead of getting some better value there so he knew exactly what it was like to have a impending UFA goalie at the TDL and the offers weren't as desperate as he maybe thought they would be.
Good points. Maybe Grier also thinks he can flip Georgiev for assets at the deadline too if Georgiev plays well in SJ the next couple of months. His caphit is effectively under $3m now and if SJ retain 50% he'd be available at ~$1.5m at the TDL as a backup with playoff starter experience.

We traded for three goalers and he has not once posted here from my recollection.

@Balthazar I swear it was in the Avs AHL, Trade, or Prospect forum. My memory is super fuzzy about it.
But if you read through his posts, at no point did he get into an argument with anyone. This is how fake news starts. You made a post saying he got into a petty argument and left. Multiple people responded to you and just assumed you were right. And that's literally how "fake news" begins.

No, he did not get into a petty argument. The fact that he hasn't been around for three goalie trades doesn't prove anything. You outright made up a lie and then said "well be hasn't been around for three goalie trades" as some kind of "proof". That's BS dude.
