What incentive would SJ have to trade Blackwood now for a 2nd + 5th when they could easily better that simply by waiting until the deadline when prices go up and teams are desperate?
Grier said that he didn't feel he was going to get a better offer than that later in the season, so he felt he had to jump on it.

I think it just depends on how they viewed Kovalenko. Since they were very high on him, this was a deal they wanted to make since you never actually know what the deadline is going to bring.

The Avs would have surely made a deal with another team had the sharks decided to wait until the TDL - that would have been 1 less suitor.

Last year Grier waited until the TDL to move Kahkonen and ended up with a Vanecek + 7th trade maybe instead of getting some better value there so he knew exactly what it was like to have a impending UFA goalie at the TDL and the offers weren't as desperate as he maybe thought they would be.

They had to make a move and who knows what the options would have been later this season. Avs are barely holding to a wild card spot atm so there is clear urgency as well.

He took over a dumpster fire and within a few years has one of the best prospect pools in the league. Whether he's the guy that can finish the rebuild and get us back to the playoffs remains to be seen, but he cleaned up our cap situation and has us moving in the right direction.
You will probably see this rebuild fail and have to restart another keeping Celebrini for the next of course. Rebuilds in general only work in small instances, it isn't a guarantee just look at the Leafs lol

The Leafs f***ed up their own rebuild with questionable moves. Signing Tavares was a turning point, massive salary for a player they did not need which lead to others asking for huge extensions and the need to ditch depth for cap reasons. Spending the Tavares money on defense and keeping some of that depth would have made the Leafs a better team.

I agree but as Ryan O'Reilly said after signing in Nashville, " There are 4 or 5 guys there that will never win" and I tell my Leaf fan friends the same all the time.

Sure. I higly question why they have sticked with Marner for so long. Another big ticket forward who does not deliver when it matters.

Still they lost a bunch of close series, maybe using the Tavares money wisely would have been enough to win some of those series.

Don't be surprised if Mikko re-signs next week now that George has been "eliminated".
We all know that Mikko shot back at Georgiev on the ice in that infamous scene, and probably wasn't the first time. But Meghan of Guerilla sports did say that despite this Mikko and Georgie did really seem to get along pretty well in the locker room, which is not that surprising considering how far back they go.

I don't believe that he had become some villain that everyone hated in the locker room, but you really can't have a goalie with that kind of Nathan MacKinnon mentality, or you better be prime f***ing Hasek. MacKinnon can yell at you for making a shitty play, because he carries this team on most nights. Georgiev had no business of looking like every goal he was scored on was someone else's fault. That's what rubbed the guys (and CMac when you look at his presser yesterday) the wrong way.

The thing that pisses me off about this isn’t the player, it's what they gave up to get him.

Grier acquired Blackwood for a 6th round pick a year ago. That's it.

Today, CMac gave up a quality young NHL player (Kovalenko) with upside, a goalie in Georgiev that while he hasn't great the last year, we have seen can be quite good when he isn't f***ed up mentally, a 2nd round pick, a 5th round pick that can become a 4th round pick, and retained 14% of George's salary... and Blackwood is a UFA at the end of the season.

Just seems like a massive overpayment and terrible asset management.

Players have glow-ups, it's happens.

The Sharks fan descriptions of "he's good when he faces a lot of shots but not when he doesn't" sounds very similar to Kuemper.
That’s how a majority of goalies sound like.

It’s incredibly difficult to stand around for multiple minutes and then face a 2 on 1, or a shot from the slot.

Probably true and my comment was tongue in the cheek type. I doubt this has any affect on Mikkos contract situation.

Was at sharks-panthers on Saturday and was very impressed at how well Blackwood played. It was to the point where I even said to myself that I wished the Avs could get competent goalie play at least as good as Blackwood.

Frankly, the cost was relatively minimal and it solved by far the biggest issue any contending team (not just Avs) had. We are 30th and 31st in GAA and save %, respectively.

I would really like to see the quote from O'Reilly, I very much doubt he'd be that blunt.

Don’t know what he said in public, but he’s told me that dressing room has the worst or lack of winning mentality he’s ever experienced at any level of hockey. There’s zero accountability and understanding of sacrifice for what it takes to win important games.
Oh. Okay then, that's good enough for me.

That's saying something, especially from someone who was around for the Dark Days of the Avs.

O'Reilly said it directly to the Toronto media and it's not something new.

edit: He was very blunt , basically they'll never win.

I bet they were on each others throats, then Meghan walks in... "Oh, hi!"
