Have you ever talked to an average nhl fan?

These people can't name you teams from any other countries. These are the people the nhl promotes itself to.

These aren't Hockey fans your dealing with, it's people who watch one league, you think the nhl would agree to that when they have nothing to gain?

I don't think the champions league is a very good idea but what the NHL is looking for going forward is international brand expansion. So that's the target. Canada is saturated and I have a suspicion they think they've got about as much out of North America as they can. So if you want expanded revenue streams.... That's where it's going to happen.

As cool as it would be, the NHL has nothing to gain from this. It would be horrible for the league if an NHL team lost to a KHL or SEL team in this type of tournament. Also you need to consider what time would this tournament take place? You can't have it after the regular season because it would conflict with the Stanley Cup playoffs and the IIHF World Hockey Championship. You can't have it after the Stanley Cup Playoffs end because then it would be June, and nobody wants to watch hockey in June. Same goes for hockey in August. It would be almost impossible to schedule it during the next season with the occasional game every few weeks like the UEFA Champion's League does because there are no breaks in the schedule for NHL teams to fly to Europe and vice versa.

They tried the Victoria cup as a preseason thing. The problem that most people don't think of is that outside of Switzerland and the KHL a lot of these teams are barely scraping by. They barely had the money to do a European champions league. Let alone flying teams to North America.

NHL kinda screwed themselves over with the idiotic "let's only have 8 teams rule, it'll prevent blowouts." Everyone loved Team NA, but they missed the out rounds. Why? Because there were only 8 teams, a single loss was eliminating. 12 teams, 16 teams, Team NA advances and more people are happy.

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing Team NA again, Team Europe trashed the entire tournament they should never be seen again, but you bring back Team NA in a 12 team format, they basically replace the host of an Olympic tournament like Korea or China and 11 NTs, or go big with 16 teams that's possible too. It's just a thought. But a team like Team NA is likely always going to drop a game, lack of familiarity compared to true national teams, usually smaller and lighter. Expand the tournament, give teams like Team NA some cannon fodder NTs to chew so we'll see them in the out rounds and that will improve the product drastically.

Though upon second thought I still don't like Team USA or another being handicapped. Make it an international U24 team maybe if anyone is left over from the Swedish, Russian or Finnish rosters to compensate maybe. Basically anyone undrafted by the Senior teams.

Id like to see this repeat every 4 years:

-2017 AllStar Game (3 on 3 scrimmages)
-2018 Olympic Hockey
-2019 AllStar Game(3 on 3 scrimmages)
-2020 World Cup of Hockey (National teams only)

As for the 2020 cup Canada/Usa/Sweden/Russia 3 game round robin most would be fine with it.

A 16 team event would be a massive blow to the world hockey championship.s

They probably could if there were this type of event to begin with.
