Looking to this ideas, im very curious about this "Ryder Cup". Are there any new infos?

– World Cup in 2020 and 2024
– Olympics in 2018 and 2022
– Two “Ryder Cup” style events in 2019 and 2023
– Preseason games in China as soon as next year (at least two)
– Two regular season games in Europe as soon as next year

Ryder cup would be a ton of fun. But personally I'm a bit biased here, would love to see the Blues play overseas again. Last time they did I didn't really have the means to even attempt making that trip.
It's too far off to really know now but I am curious to know if the World Cup is keeping the same format.

it is far away but the skinny was that team leftovers europe and young guns were one offs. But since the young guns were pretty popular, who knows ?

This is basically what the NHL proposed to the NHLPA recently. I don't believe that there is any additional information right now, but it does provide an insight into the NHL's thinking. Bettman mentioned the "Ryder Cup" thing in recent interviews but didn't provide additional details.

Some prominent reporters (Lebrun I believe, Friedman) reported that the national federations were not happy with the gimmick teams as they were last time. Hard to know what the NHL will do.

That really has to be a one and done thing. Yes, there was buzz and excitement for the under 23 team but ultimately the concept of those two teams failed and it cannot be repeated. Having a team Europe in the finals really backfired on that tournament and the whole idea has to go the way of the dodo.

No more of that.

Ryder Cup sounds like when the NHL had the World play against North America in the All-Star game. Terrible idea!

Otherwise it looks rather decent with the NHL playing at both the Olympics and hosting the World Cup (as long as there are no gimmick teams).

Idk, Ryder cup could be a bust but I'm not against them trying. Anything to keep this game growing globally

My prediction is very little of this, if any of it at all, will end up happening.

I really don't get the appeal of this "Ryder Cup" thing. As someone has already mentioned it just seems like a rehash of a briefly used, and long since abandoned, all-star game format.

Id like to see this repeat every 4 years:

-2017 AllStar Game (3 on 3 scrimmages)
-2018 Olympic Hockey
-2019 AllStar Game(3 on 3 scrimmages)
-2020 World Cup of Hockey (National teams only)

I am mostly interested whether NHL teams who will start in Europe are willing to play friendly games against local teams. The quality gap is obviously big. Still from what I remember none of NHL didn't look negativelly affected by it in the past. Or maybe they just didnt say it openly.

World Cup is fine, as long as they kill the fake teams idea.

Ryder Cup I fail to see how it would generate any interest. Players won't be playing for their country. Canadians aren't going to get riled up with the whole, "it's our game" rah rah stuff. And Americans aren't going to give a crap about a continental team. Doubt the Europeans care too much either. Finns would much rather beat Sweden and Americans would much rather beat Canada etc, than beat a continent. Will devolve very quickly into a glorified All Star Game.

This big plan was referenced last week during the Vegas press conference. None of this may happen but I am a bit surprised that such proposal exists in the first place because of the well known dislike for Olympics participation among NHL owners. So, at least participation is still on the table, but it is not looking good because neither IOC or IIHF have yet stepped up and agreed to pay the insurances.

The Ryder Cup idea has always sounded stupid, altough still not as stupid as the gimmick teams in WCH, assuming it is not mixing national and non-national teams, but you can't help comparing it to the NA-EU all-star games many years ago and expecting same quality of play. In golf it works because golf is normally an individual sport. I think I can endure this though if it means Olympics with NHL continues.

If they want to do the World Cup again, have it be a true World Cup and do the 6 group 4 teams per group thing the soccer world cup used to do.

The IIHF agreed to pay all the costs associated with NHL participation.

The main point is that we'll get a best on best tournament every 4 years in the Olympics. That's what's important here. I don't think many care about the 3 all star games/tournaments in the other years whether its the Ryder cup, all star game or world cup

Team EU would not include Russians, Swiss and Norwegians.

Ryder ****ing Cup would be simply awesome; something like that we already tasted in the 'watered down' world cup NA vs. Europe. (Did they play each other, probably not, but whatever.)

Other than that, Olympics sound legit.

Whatever gimmick tourney it takes to get the players to the Olympics every four years is okay by me. Have a fantasy draft cup or a World Cup with a team of over 35 year olds or teams with left shooters and right shooter only or whatever. I don't care. I care about the Olympics.

Want to grow the game? Have a UEFA style champions league tournament.

Have you ever talked to an average nhl fan?

These people can't name you teams from any other countries. These are the people the nhl promotes itself to.

These aren't Hockey fans your dealing with, it's people who watch one league, you think the nhl would agree to that when they have nothing to gain?

As cool as it would be, the NHL has nothing to gain from this. It would be horrible for the league if an NHL team lost to a KHL or SEL team in this type of tournament. Also you need to consider what time would this tournament take place? You can't have it after the regular season because it would conflict with the Stanley Cup playoffs and the IIHF World Hockey Championship. You can't have it after the Stanley Cup Playoffs end because then it would be June, and nobody wants to watch hockey in June. Same goes for hockey in August. It would be almost impossible to schedule it during the next season with the occasional game every few weeks like the UEFA Champion's League does because there are no breaks in the schedule for NHL teams to fly to Europe and vice versa.
