NHL teams build their teams in many different ways. Some construct their clubs via free agency while others do it through trades. However, the main way teams create a roster is through the NHL Draft. Most years have maybe one or two players make the roster, but some years the general manger gets it right and gets a cornerstone or two for the franchise. The Last Word on Hockey is doing the best draft class for each team with the exception of the Seattle Kraken. Today we look at the Arizona Coyotes best draft class.

Arizona Coyotes Best Draft Class: 2015

2015 NHL Draft

We selected the 2015 draft as the best for the Arizona Coyotes. While there were other drafts even going back to the Winnipeg Jets era, 2015 shined as the most attractive. With six players drafted that season who have all made it to the NHL, the choice was pretty simple. We will go over each drafted player from 2015 to give you an overview of each player’s involvement with the franchise.

I think '05 is better. Hanzal + Yandle.

Particularly in impact to THIS franchise.

Strome is certainly an NHLer but a whiff of a 3OA.

Heck I might even take '09 over '15, sure it only resulted in one real NHLer but he was a #1 defenseman that some people considered a top 5 D in the entire league. We can't claim that in any other draft at any other position.

'16 is probably better too if you give Chychrun another season or two.

Too much emphasis on making the NHL, not enough emphasis on the goal of the draft which is to help the team doing the drafting.

OEL is the best Coyotes pick, in terms of actual impact on the Coyotes. Briere was a great pick but not for us. Wheeler was a great pick but not for us. Yandle and Hanzal
were great but not for that many games.

OEL is the only player drafted by the Coyotes in the last quarter of a century that actually had a major impact on the franchise for an extended period of time. None of our other draft choices really moved the needle in a meaningful way.

And if you want to know why the Coyotes are terrible, this is as good a reason as any.

The draft pick that was most memorable to me (not in a good way) was using a first rounder for Samuelsson. I saw him the year before he was drafted and the guy could not skate.

Presently, I think 2016 is the best draft class. Keller might be disappointing but I'll take Keller / Chychrun over Strome / Garbage / Garland any day. Even if it's Schmaltz / Garland I think Chychrun is significantly better than both players and Keller isn't far behind either.

However in the future? Definitely 2018 or 2019.

Jenik, Emberson, Prosvetov, Hayton, Kirk

Macelli, Soderstrom, Raty, Bergkvist, Farinacci.

Honestly if things progress well 2018 will probably be our best draft.

Its about assessing the Scouts though.

If the scouts drafted a good player, and the GM screwed it up by trading him, or not signing him or whatever, should the scouts be blamed for what management did with the player after the scouts job is done?

Only way for this plan to work is if next year is the best ever and the following is like top 3. Otherwise, we have another decade of misery ahead. At least we're already experts in that regard.

The Coyotes have cleaned out their entire front office, including full blown scouting department sweep outs maybe half a dozen times. Not counting natural attrition. They’ve also been notoriously horrific about prospect development. The likes of Boedker, Turris and Mueller all likely would have had better careers if drafted by other teams, as examples. It’s so hard to say what “The Coyotes” are. I don’t think there’s anyone left in Ownership, Management, Hockey Ops, Coaching or in the locker room that’s been with the team longer than five years. I think Christian Fischer is our longest tenured player. Hahaha.

This is basically year one for me. This feels like an expansion team right now.

Yeah, 2005 ticks more boxes for both the scouts and the players' impact.
- landed the first round pick
- found a steal (Yandle)
- 2 out of 5 is a good hit rate
- impacted the franchise
- part of our best playoffs team
- best in draft class. Yandle top 5 games played, Hanzal 22nd even with all his injuries. Both players top 12 in points.

By comparison 2015
- flopped on both first round picks (Strome and Merkley)
- found a steal (Garland)
- 4 out of 9 is decent but 7 of those were in the top 83 picks so ultimately disappointing not a single one of those 7 picks was an impact player.
- struggling to be best in draft class. Garland could eventually get to top 10.

2022 and 2023 are the best 2 Coyote draft classes ever.
