NHL Network was talking about the trade deadline approaching teams are always looking to bolster their bottom 6 and how important it is to make a run in the playoffs.

They quoted Steve Yzerman who said a few years ago they had a 4th line that was completely unplayable, and the other lines wore down on the increase in work load, and he learned from that.

Tampa has been the face of this with their bottom 6 the past couple of seasons. It seems like teams focus less on their top 6 and more on their bottom 6.

So I am wondering what are currently some of the best 4th lines in the NHL?

Duhaime-Sturm-Dewar/Bjugstad has been very good all year for the Wild, Evason has been able to roll 4 lines every game and it’s made for an energized 3rd period team. Has some scoring ability and plays a very nice corner game. Skill and speed levels very high for a depth line, I believe all 4 of these guys analytically rank as 3rd liners and above.

When threads like this come up I always remember that quote by Don Sweeney on Trent Frederic. So that's my answer - good ole Trenty boeh.

Homer vote goes to Canucks with Motte - Lammikko - Highmore. Probably the best 4th line the team has iced in the last decade, which isn’t saying much, but still.

It really is astonishing how many former Hawks forwards are now flourishing in their roles for their new teams. Bowman lol. Sure knew how to lose a trade.

Not in the top tier in the NHL, but I really like the Canucks 4th line of Motte-Lammikko-Highmore.

After years of an older, expensive 4th line, its great to see a young, fast and cost effective 4th line here.

Motte may be one of the better 4th liners in the NHL.

Agree completely that the fourth line is crucial to a successful team, and the Blues might not have won the Cup without Sundqvist-Steen-Barbashev.

Our current fourth line is a rotating cast of spare guys who don't fit in the top 9. Decent players but no real identity at the moment.

Stevie Y knows the importance of a solid fourth line as well as anyone as those Wings teams had great role players.

Haven’t seen them play but on paper

kostin - Bozak - Sundqvist looks pretty damn good

Motte definitely could move up the lineup but please nobody tell him that :P

The Canes 4th line is usually pretty good but not really set in stone. Most of the players that have regularly played there can play center or wing as well. Combination of usually of Kotkaniemi, Martinook, Stepan or Lorentz

why are those names not playing higher up would be my bigger question

If your team is not in playoff position, 99/100 times, they have no business being discussed in this kind of thread. To have an "elite" 4th line, your top 3 lines also need to be excellent. If not, that 4th line is really a 2nd or 3rd line.
Has to be the teams with crazy depth like Carolina, Florida, Tampa, St. Louis & Minnesota. Those fourth lines can burn you.
this is where you will find your correct answer.
