In all fairness a just a review and opinion of some of the dealings of Rutherford and Allvin.

Winning always makes a difference, but we in Vancouver have seen this before, 2014/2015, again? I don't think so the defence as constructed last year makes a massive difference in outcomes. Even without Demko

I like the results of the job they have done

BUT

Winning eclipses some similarly questionable deals.
Signing Kuzmenko was a coup but the trading him, Hunter Brzustewicz, Jurmo, a 2024 first and 2024 conditional 4th for a rental in Lindholm borderlines on one of the worst ever Canuck trades involving Eriksson, OEL and subsequent long term buyout pain yet to be endured for years to come and that in fairness to Benning the buyout was not his decision. Looks questionable especially now that OEL is playing LD and RD and also on the cup finalist's #1 PP unit just months after leaving.

Mikheyev, maybe a little over pay on signing but he had good upside especially playing with Pettersson and Kuzmenko, that line was potent. A knee injury and the next year not much time with that combination again. Kuz is traded and the whole line, the other two, fell off the planet, Mik scored what? One goal after and was paraded around the line ups and Pettersson reverted to a pre NHL rookie level. Did that trade have anything to do with their fall? Who knows but the timing is there. Now the refrain is "get rid of him".

Now this moving on from players doesn't seem to work for this management group so far, the season before last they couldn't give away Garland or Boeser both were playing well below their pay grade.

It seems these guys want to trade when the value is at the lowest. Or let them walk? And that is familiar.

Like the Benning debacle the cap is being used and abused to frighten the fans or as an reason/excuse to try to hit some home runs.
Numbers listed by CF and PP show AHL players on the NHL roster and cap hits which just diminishes how much space there is and hence a reason to let FA's walk, MAYBE, there is still time yet.

It appears that this management group HAD a plan and vision of the team then came Tocchet so it looks like there was a change midstream and some players aren't fitting. Kuzmenko, 30+ goal scorer essentially given away and now the team desperately is looking to find replacement for a shorter period of time at almost twice the cap hit. Mikheyev did score 31 points this year, only one less than Joshua albeit Joshua does hit more but then he also takes many more penalties and wasn't killing too many late in the season.

Anyway back to the 2.0 thingy.

This management group maybe about to encumber the team with, if rumours are true, more elderly bloated contracts for players that should be middle six guys in the next 3 years.

The number of picks traded is Benningish but apart from Lindholm, okay results.
Benning's best 1rst traded was for Miller, Rutherford/Allvin for Hronek
Benning's worst was the entire Eriksson OEL debacle but there was a first in there too, now the Kuzmenko trade and all that went with it.

Allving/Rutherford did do what baffled Benning and that was greatly improved the defence. They did something Benning seemed to abhor, they got big players to play defence. In fairness Benning did sign Myers but then had Myers playing way outside his comfort zone making him a scape goat for really poor managing

Now waiting until the last minute and maybe arguing about 500k. This is where that false cap number comes in.
Is it possible to hear "we ran out of time" again only this time with 4 GM's?

Rumours now about signing a Kuzmenko replacement who fit well with Pettersson for an unknown older partner at twice the money with term of close to a decade. What if they don't mesh? Would that make Petey's 11+mil into a really bad deal? Did that contract just determine what the team does to not lose face now? Kuzmenko scored at Boeser's pace with the Flames while adjusting to the Flames playing with no set line meanwhile Boeser was riding shot gun with Miller and on the #1 PP unit at that. Lots is made of the pair working well together, the same was said of Kuz and Petey when combined they scored 176 points. Now desperation to find a fit, rumours of 9+ million to spend on a 30 year old player committed to up to 8 years to age 38. What if that doesn't work? Then what?

It is still early, things can change, rumours are just that click bait.

Winning erases all bad deals. Scary thing is if the defence is not improved the team is still riding on Demko's shoulders and will age out in 3 years.

For all that this is a comparison I still have faith this management group will get the job done.

Just tired of having smoke blown up my .......

IMHO the longer they waited to July 1rst the more the FA's are encouraged to wait and see if the grass is greener on the other side. IMO they hurt their negotiating position through their own folly. The more the Vancouver fanbase finds other things to do, the more they have to have the bought media support them.

Ever wonder why the media is always about Zadorov signing and it's problems? If they want him then just don't sign Myers and his 2/3 year contract or add up what was spent last year and add 500k. Then they can sign that other guy, Dillion too and be improved. Or use some of that AHL player money that is included in the current NHL cap hit calculations, use some of the LTIR money, they used it last year and still had funds for TDL, the same as Vegas and others did. Suddenly in Vancouver that get eliminated from SPORT SHOWS. "They don't want to use that because they can't build up extra at the TDL" What's that mean? The team will not be good enough until then and they know it now?

The talk about improving, okay just get EP back to the 100 point player he was up to January. If this is a problem because they went away from Kuzmenko's 30+ goals and chemistry with EP then they cost the team a round in the playoffs because EP was invisible, last playoff type games he was a point per game player on the 6-40-9 line.
One last observation, all the players Tocchet has issues with are jettisoned no matter the cost or impact.

I hear Pettersson thinking about doing Kuzmenko type work outs this year in a sunny climate mixing vacation with workouts. Having good time. Nah, just threw that in because Tocchet really hated that, that's why he complained Kuz was out of shape, but he wasn't, just confused by changing roles and instructions.

AGAIN OPINION and just for clicks/likes or fun. No different from another "they can sign a mythical player" that they have no idea will work well with Pettersson for 10 million rather than sign ONE player named Zadorov, a fan favourite who has already poo pooed the 5.5 mil numbers bantered about at his end of season media.

Not even remotely close. Light year level distances apart.

Hiding under WTG's bed...
2024 Jack Adams award winner - Ric Tocchet
2024 Jim Gregory award finalist - Patrik Alvin

The Jethro Bodine and his rogues gallery (John freaking Weisbrod & 7 years of who as our head coaches).

Sorry, but I don't see any comparison. Are they perfect? Of course not but anybody with a pulse would be viewed more favourable than "Dumb & Dumber":

John: "Can we get the cartoon network on these monitors?"
Jim: "John, can't you see I'm talking on the phone with the psychic hotline?"

Benning traded picks when team was a dumpster fire. Allvin traded picks when the team was playoff bound.

Slight difference.

Doubling down on mistakes got us years of Luca Sbisa.
This management crew has paid attention to what's going on with our farm club. Compare what Alvin inherited from Dumb & Dumber to what we have today (still a work in progress but you can see a desire to build something there in Abby imho).

Jethro Bodine is still looking up where Utica is on a map today.

They’re not perfect, but the difference in competence is galaxies apart.

Benning did things that weren’t defensible by anyone, including from his own peers, from the moment he took those actions.

That’s never been the case with Allvin and JR.

Why is this categorized as 'Speculation'? There are no speculated facts/transactions here at all, just one person's wildly incorrect opinion.

There is some truth to this... While current brass has shown a much higher level of professionalism, the team results have absolutely caused many to turn a blind eye to some obvious mistakes or near mistakes. Benning could have been forgiven for everything up until the post bubble run offseason. I suppose it's entirely possible for history to repeat, there is going to be some significant turnover, at sensitive positions.

Alvin/JR have been decisive, but also impulsive. By all accounts they nearly traded Miller less than a year after his signing... a disaster avoided by other teams lackluster offers. Just imagine the shitstorm that would have been watching JT put up a career high this season for another team..

Trading Kuzmenko was a huge blunder. Largely on Tocchet, but Alvin holds the cards at the end of the day. Just completely ignored the teams most glaring needs, and ultimately led to their downfall. Hell they were very lucky not to have lost to Nashville.

Pivoted on Lindholm about a week after acquiring him, weren't there also reports of moving Zadorov as well?

Mikheyev... well yea.. A much better player than he showed this year, but the position they are in now, was pretty damn predictable.

I think this season will prove to have been the teams best shot at the finals, but that doesn't mean they can't win it all via a harder road in upcoming seasons.

The biggest thing they did was have the team ready to go this season, but also after the complete opposite last year.. That roster had no business missing the playoffs.

More so Gillis 2.0 so far.
