I'm sure it played a role. Mind, a puck to the mask happens frequently. What doesn't happen frequently is hitting a goalie's head while theyre in their crease.
I've had both happen. I've been demolished while in the crease, either while making a play or by accident, never got concussed.
The last time I took one right off the front of the mask I saw stars and felt a little off. I shook it off and stayed in the game, which is absolutely the wrong move in beer league hockey. But a puck to the mask, hitting the right spot, can easily shake the cage, your head inside that, and your brain inside that.
It's like a player helmet or football helmet. The mask is to protect blunt force trauma type injuries and provide a minor level of cushioning, but not even remotely close to enough to stop a concussion.
