Royal Ascot (England):
  • Handle: Approximately $5 million per race for the 5-day event, seven races each day.
  • Race 3: Khaadem (Oisin Murphy/Charles Hills) won the Group I $1.27 million (US) Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, the signature event at the meet, by a half-length at the lofty odds of 14-to-1 ($34.60 in North America pools). Last year, he won at 80-to-1. Khadeem lost his last four races with the most recent win being this race in 2023, his lone two winners in his past 12 runs. The 8-year-old has nine wins in 35 starts. Khaadem is the first 8-year-old to win this race and prior the last repeat winner was Right Boy in 1958-59.
  • Day 5 of 5:

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Chad Brown is at his best at his home tracks but today he teamed with Flavien Prat three times and won each. The past two days, Brown won four of the five races he entered and finished 8 4-3-0 (dual entries in three losses). Prat-Brown is a perfect 4-for-4 the past two days. Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables was the winning owner each time. Unfortunately for the smaller handicapper, the early $1 double paid $2.
Thistledown (Ohio):
  • Handle: $3.2 million of which $1.2 million was bet on the Ohio Derby, the state's biggest.
  • Erik Barbaran rode three times and returned two winners both in stakes. He plies his craft now in the West Virginia-Ohio circuits. He was named Jockey of the Week in North America a few weeks ago.
  • David Haldar-Megan Fadlovich teamed for two double-digit winners at 11-1 and 20-1. Fadlovich rode from places ranging from Suffolk Downs (MA) to Mountaineer (WV) to Turf Paradise (AZ) prior to becoming a trainer in 2020. She endured great hardship on Valentine's Day 2020 when her boyfriend Coty Davidson died in a car accident in which she was seriously injured. A rose bloomed today.
  • Luis Saez, one of the nation's top jocks, was 4 0-1-0 in an underwhelming day at a track in which he rarely visits. Talk about burning money, his horses were sent off:
    • 2-to-1
    • 1-to-5
    • 4-to-5
    • 4-to-5
  • Race 12: Misty Veil (Ramon Vazquez/Michael Maker) won the $250,000 Lady Jacqueline Stakes.
  • Race 13: Batten Down (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) wired the field at 3-to-1 to win the $500,000 Grade 3 Ohio Derby. The lightly raced 3-year-old broke his maiden in his last prior start, his fourth lifetime. Unfortunately, four of the ten horses entered scratched and thus betting options were reduced.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 4: Play Like a Colt (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) is a nice looking colt. Brittany is part owner for the horses assumingly for the football team and a Maryland bred. A 300-day layofff.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Vahva (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Cherie DeVaux) won the Grade 3 $250,000 Chicago Stakes as expected at 4-to-5..

Ruidoso (NM) has carded races for Friday and Saturday with post times at 11:00 am local time (Mountain). Hopefully all in the region are safe after the fires that affected many residents and the racing community. Ruidoso is a good track for quarter horses. Time trials appear to be what is carded and eventually the track will host a $1,000,000 race. That is 1:00 pm ET for first post. Saturday has an extensive 17 races.

Congrats to Vinny Viola on winning the Stanley Cup. First came the Kentucky Derby now the Cup. Arguably the two toughest trophies in North America to win. Paul Maurice and Todd Pletcher can exchange hardships, too,

Lord Stanley may be making his way to Gulfstream.

i just learned something new that may be of some slight interest to y'all. jose santos jr is a jockey agent to about 8 different riders. most agents represent 2-3 riders, depending on the tracks' jurisdictions. his riders cover 3-4 racing circuits.

That is a significant total. I don't recall seeing one agent with a deep roster. I could be mistaken but I think the prominent jurisdictions permit two journeymen and one bug per agent. I looking at Santos's clients.... he may have one but in Chris Elliott (Stewart's son) and the rest could be spread to different areas.

North America's Jockey of the Week for the second time. He had 11 wins in the latest period. Quite the feat.

On the Move from Churchill:
  • To Saratoga: Tyler Gaffalione, Jose Ortiz and Luis Saez.
  • To Ellis: Florent Geroux, James Graham and Corey Lanerie.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Happy Birthday: Victor Carrasco won three straight rides en route to a 5 3-1-1 day, his 32nd b'day.
  • Race 9: Oncourtcommentator (Sheldon Russell/Brittaney Russell) gave the married couple another victory and at the lofty odds of 9-to-2. First-time starters under her care are rocking under the Elkstone ownership label.

Unpleasant weather near Toronto today will alter the big race day at Woodbine. Expect some turf races to be moved to synthetic.

Ed Olczyk is guest handicapper at Woodbine today.

  • Steve Asmussen had a tough day going 20 1-2-2 sending out 10 horses at both Churchill (KY) and Lone Star (TX).
Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Chalk: Eight of the 11 races finished with the favorite on top.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid $12.15. Payouts were exasperating throughout the early part of the day.
  • Race 7: Neat (Junior Alvarado/Rob Atras) won the Grade 3 won the $250,000 Grade 3 Manila Stakes. Alvarado had a broad smile throughout the presentation, an oddity for the generally subdued journeyman.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Card: 12 races, six stakes including three graded.
  • Handle: $18.8 million which set a new all-time record for the Stephen Foster card now in its 43rd year.
  • Race 11: Kingsbarn (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) won the $1,000,000 Grade I Stephen Foster Stakes at 9-to-1.
  • Race 8: Scylla (Javier Castellano/Bill Mott) won the $500,000 Grade 2 Fleur de Lis Stakes and withstood an objection en route by fifth place finisher Julien Leparoux.
  • Race 7: Ottoman Fleet (Flavien Prat/Charlie Appleby) won the $500,000 Grade 2 Wise Dan Stakes.
  • Record Not Shattered:

Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Engaged Couple Kelsi Harr and Robert Cline: The engaged couple were certainly engaged in what was a history-setting achievement. I remember playing her at Oaklawn about three years ago and dismayed at her being removed at around 50-to-1; she returned to win her next ride at 25-to-1 or so. Good stuff!
  • Race 6: Virtually (Kelsi Harr/Robert Cline) was the longest shot on the board and prevailed at 50-to-1.
  • Race 7: Outlaw Run (Kelsi Harr/Robert Cline) won at 35-1 and helped produce the biggest $2 double in track history and unofficially state history at a staggering $4,067.20.
  • Race 8: The $1 Pick 3 paid over $15,000.

Lone Star (Texas):
  • Race 4: Ova Charged (Jose Guerrero/Shane Wilson) won the $125,000 Chicken Fried Stakes. The 6-year-old mare is 6-for-6 this year, including a graded stakes win at Churchill Downs, rides a 7-race win streak and is a remarkable 18 15-1-0 lifetime with nearly a million in earnings.
Los Alamitos (California):
  • Race 8: Wynstock (Kyle Frey/Bob Baffert) gave the trainer an eighth straight victory in this race and a 1-2 finish in the Los Alamitos Derby in which stable mate Corenell (Edwin Maldonado/Bob Baffert) placed. The 3-to-5 favorite (Hector Berrios/John Sadler) finished fourth in a field of five. The all-Baffert exacta paid a resounding $32, the third time in the past five years his horses finished 1-2 in this race. Baffert not only won this race for the eight straight year but 14 times total including five times at Hollywood.
1719883894468.png
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Card: 10 races including five graded stakes,
  • Handle: $7.2 million.
  • Mark Casse won four of the seven races he entered and finished 14 4-2-3 winning three graded stakes of five he entered.

  • Steve Asmussen sent out 13 starters at Lone Star (TX) and Churchill (KY) combined. The past two days, his excessive stable finished 33 3-5-2 at those two tracks.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Dylan Davis rode four winners on eight mounts. The winners were sent off approximately an average of 20-to-1.
  • Future NYRA Racing: Closing day for this meet is July 7. Saratoga opens July 11 and runs through Labor Day weekend. At that point, racing in New York returns to Aqueduct likely until a probable 4-day Belmont at Saratoga 2025 (early June 2025). Belmont could open in 2026. After that, Aqueduct could close operations permanently and NYRA would run exclusively at Saratoga and Belmont.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing Day of the Meet: Upcoming dates in the Commonwealth:
  • Ellis Park -- 7/4/2024-8/26/2024
  • Kentucky Downs -- 8/29/2024-9/11/2024
  • Churchill Downs -- 9/12/2024-9/29/2024
  • Keeneland -- 10/4/2024-10/26/2024
  • Churchill Downs -- 10/27/2024-12/1/2024
  • Record-Setting Money Generated: A record high of $708.3 million wagered during the 150th Spring Meet's 43 racing days. The prior mark was established in 2022. The Kentucky Derby was the highlight of the meet: A great event and this year's finish was nearly unparalleled.
1719796286788.png
1719831364642.png
  • Leading Jockeys: Tyler Gaffalione and Jose Ortiz with 45 wins each. Gaffalione earned approximately $1.5 million more than Ortiz.
  • Leading Trainers: Steve Asmussen with 33 wins. Kenny McPeek led all earners with $4.6 million.
  • Leading Ownership: Juddmonte with 10 wins and about $50,000 more than Godolphin in earnings.
  • Adam Rice, part of the famous Rice racing family, had four winners with nine starters this meet (44%).
  • Wesley Ward finished 31% at the meet. Among the nine trainers with 10+ winners, his winning percentage was a runaway leader.
  • Carlo Vaccarezza, a restauranteur in both south Florida and Kentucky, had a solid meet going 10 3-4-1 (30%/80%). Hitting the board 80% of the time at Churchill is robust. The trainer is 24% this year, another high grade.
  • Race 10: Herchee (Edgar Morales/Helen Pitts) was out for the first time and at 26-to-1 was the longest shot on the board yet prevailed. The meet finals had sensational prices including a $.50 Pick 5 for $131,000+ and a similarly priced $.20 Pick 6 for $131,000+.
  • Race 4: Vodka With a Twist (Flavien Prat/Phil D'Amato) won the $225,000 Debutante Stakes. The 2-year-old filly was purchased for the paltry sum of $2,500 last year and after three starts has now earned $200,000+.
