Just curious...is there any particular reason why the Oilers are the only(?) team that has the bench on the side that's not visible on TV ?

As post #2 says it's an old arena. If you look at footage from the 80s and 90s a number of teams had the cameras on the same side as the benches before they renovated their arena or moved into a new one. Buffalo, Calgary, Hartford, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and Vancouver were also like this.

This is the last season you'll see it in the NHL. When the Oilers move into Rogers Place next season the cameras will be opposite of the benches.

Speaking about the Oilers arena, I was watching the game last night and it looked like the lights are kind of dull in that place. Was that just me, or do other people see this too?

Always like that. Actually my favorite away arena to watch the Wild play on TV. Super sad it's the last go around this year.

Makes sense

Thanks!

The Wild's 100-0-0 record against the Oilers doesn't have anything to do with your enjoyment? ;)

Absolutely hate how the player benches are on the opposite side then the other 29 rinks. Watching games on TV is brutal. Thankfully that will be fixed next season.

come on buddy, does it really effect the way you watch or enjoy the game? How many Oiler's home games do you watch a season?

I'm so used to it. Why is it brutal watching it? lol. I couldn't give a rats a** if half of the arenas are like that and half aren't. How does it ruin somebody's experience? Boggles my mind.

Because of some scrums that might occur by the benches?

Is it really going to be called Rogers Place? Don't we already have enough stadiums sponsored by Rogers?

Well are you going to pony up the millions and millions of dollars for the naming rights? Its good exposure, I'm not sure why Bell, Loblaws and some of the other big Canadian Companies don't do it.

As for the OP, never noticed that - now its going to bug me all season

I actually like to see the numbers of the players coming off the bench during line changes...

Am I the only one?
Same here. Sometimes you can check to see if an injured player has returned to the bench too.

I'm really looking forward to Rogers Place but I'll miss Rexall a lot. Shame that the last playoff game it hosted will likely be from 2006.

rexall and SAP center have always been noticeably darker

I always figured it was because the arena was old, too - sad that this little "quirk" is leaving, but I would prefer to see the line changes. If I go to see a game, I find it more important to sit on the side facing the benches than on the end where we attack twice, which is what everyone seems to want. Then again, I love watching Rask (minus the last few games), so that's my bias.

For whoever semi-sarcastically talked about line change drama - yeah, line changes may be uninteresting for the most part, but it's a little better than staring at an open penalty box.

I always wondered if the lefty/righty thing was important with benches - particularly for wings. For example, the Bruins are the only Original Six team to have the home team sit camera left. It's obviously a function of where the locker rooms are situated, but I've wondered if it makes extra work for some wingers who have to skate away from the bench for two periods instead of one.
