His problem is that he plays WAY too aggressive and thinks he's an offensive defenseman for some reason.
That's clearly what Bednar wants from all his dmen. Manson, Graves...he wants the D to skate with the puck and drive the offense.

That classic stay at home D with a good first pass thing? Not under his watch.

The closest thing to a real stay at home D we had in years was Jack Johnson and even JJ was playing offensive defenseman all the time. That's why we are fine with guys like Malinski on the 3rd pair...because he doesn't have to play like a classic 3rd pairing defenseman.

Theres nothing wrong with Manson, this is always his game. You know he will tighten up when asked but right now Bednar wants him to be driving

The G-Manson pairing works so well because during the regular season, G carries them while Manz YOLO's it

Then during the playoffs, Manson steps up and carries the pairing while G struggles with the increased forechecking

They got Manson pretty much just for G.

When they traded for Manson Sakic said they were looking for a partner for Girard and that was the season after the Vegas series disaster. Manson was exactly what they were looking for.

It's good that they work well together.

Defense experts, is Manson cooked?

Looks behind the play always now.
Naw he ain’t cooked but what frustrates me with him is that most of his mistakes are completely preventable. He gets so insanely aggressive out there and picks terrible times to pinch, that’s why I think he gets caught up and chases the play more often than he should.

When he uses that aggressive play the way he’s supposed to and lines up guys to hit, he’s at his very best.

Ryan Graves woulda been a good partner for Malinski..

Probably
I still like Graves apart from his stupid tendency to just blindly fire the puck from the point but naaaaaaw he wouldn’t have been a good match. People still think he’s a stay at home guy. He isn’t, and any attempts to turn him into one usually prove disastrous.

They just need a better version of de Haan. A guy who plays a quiet game who can feed Malinski the puck and cover for him when he jumps into the play. Graves wouldn’t have been that guy.
