Just looked up the average age of the team. The defense is #4 youngest, the forwards are #19 and the goalies are #27. Overall, the team is #17 youngest in the league, about average. It's the same core that was 26 two years ago, making it the second youngest in the league, but now two years passed, so the team is 28.

The 3 oldest teams are our 3 main rivals: Devils, Islanders and Philly. Islanders just don't have a lot of depth which is why they acquired the vets to fill in until the rookies are ready. Philly is also ok. I believe the Devils are done. They are by far the oldest team in the league (almost by 1.5 years) and have a barren farm. Plus, they will have to surrender a first either this or next year. The Mickey Mouse Club will be back and very soon.

Next year's team should be very young. Adding Kreider, Fasth/Hrivik/Thomas and McIlrath in place of Halpern, Asham and Eminger will make the the team 1.5 years younger.

The average top-12 forward would be 26.75 and the top-6 blue line would be 25.00. The goaltending would be old, but only because Biron would drag down the average.

The starters (top-12, top-6 and Lundqvist) would be only 26.42. That's still very much an up and coming team.

Kind of shortsighted, or you are just being a Ranger fan? :p:

From their drafts 2008-2012 the Devs have Henrique, Larsson, Matteau, Tedenby, Jacobsen already playing on the team. Their defensive prospects are Merrill, Helgeson, Gelinas, Urbom, Burlon, Scarlett, and Severson are all considered very good for their age. The forwards are thin cause of how many are actually on the big club, but Reid Boucher has 57 goals in 62 OHL games.

Never underestimate the Devil/s.

No team is good forever. People have been saying forever that the Devils would be done... and it hasn't happened yet. It will eventually but I think it's ignorant to insist that now is the time. It might be, but we don't know.

I feel like a team being good is like life, it might go on for a long time but eventually it ends. The Blues made the playoffs for like 25 years in a row and then became a bottom feeder. Wasn't that the case with the Hawks too? I may be wrong.

Hawks and Boston. Red Wings are on a good stretch as well.

Reid Boucher had a hat trick tonight, so he has 60 goals in the OHL this year, new Sarnia Sting record too, beating out so guy name Stamkos.

Josefson and Tedenby are massive disappointments (especially Josefson -- had a lot of hope for him and he's making me look bad). Tedenby is actually just a bad player and I was never a fan of the kid after the year after his draft. Just looked weak, lost, and not good. Not much has changed. Outside of Merrill, everyone you just listed are mediocre prospects. Boucher is a complete question mark as of right now, too.

Satan is a powerful enemy indeed. I learned not to proclaim the end of evil in the 1990s when they would consistently lose great players (Stevens, Niedermayer, Daneyko, Nichols, etc) and continue to compete at a very high level. However, they would constantly replenish their their system with guys like Rafalski. I doubt they have those guys anymore. HF has their prospects ranked at #27, and that's despite a decent blue line crop.

Here's what they have in terms of under-33 talent that's already in the NHL:

Kovalchuk - Henrique - Clarkson
Gionta - Zajac - Bernier
Matteau - Carter - Tedenby
??? - Loktionov/Josefson - ???

Among their 7C or 6.5B prospects, they have only Reid Boucher on the LW. So while their LW and C can be filled (if no prospect goes bust), C still looks pretty weak and I have no idea who'll play on the RW.

And I'm not even going into their G situation. Their top 2 highest ranked goalie prospect are in the ECHL, giving up over half a goal more per game than Stajcer. I can see the argument that they were sent all the way down because of some great depth the Devils have in the net, but if they are only in the ECHL because of numbers, then they should be dominating, not getting rocked. I haven't seen them, but I did see several times Keith Kinkaid, who beat them out for a job in the AHL, and he's significantly worse than Talbot.

Yeah, I watched him play last week. Was very impressed. Gets shots off from good position using his speed. Seems Gaborik lite.

23 and 22 yrs old respectively.

And they're busts?

Just like Kreider ;)

This is the Devils, every year Ranger fans have said their prospects are mediocre, going back to 1984.

Massive disappointment, bust. Whatever you want to call it, its way too soon to say either, that's my point.
Not equal, at all.

You can be disappointed in something without declaring it a failure. When I tell my 8 year old nephew I'm disappointed in him, it doesn't mean I think he's going to live off his parents into his sixties and become a child pornographer.

GREAT analogy.

You honestly think Tedenby is not a disappointment? He wasn't even good in the SEL. He's not even good in the AHL. This is a guy who has only had success in the WJCs. At least Kreider had a good college career to go along with his great WJCs and solid NHL playoffs. They are not remotely similar. Tedenby also doesn't have the physical set that will allow Kreider to be at least a 3rd/4th line player.

Tedenby will be back in Sweden in 2 years.

I don't see how anyone who has actually seen him play could think otherwise.

Frankly, I'd label Tedenby a bust. Josefson is still a massive disappointment. I expected him to be like Zajac. He's far, far from it. His injury did not help.

The fact that he was indeed making absolute statements about what these players will become should not reflect negatively on my analogy.

This.

Every time you try to say that someone isn't great, people accuse you of saying he's a bust.

I think its that you are so sure about it, which is my usual problem with what you say, like its a fact, how could I dare question it? ;)

Still, 23 yrs old we're talking here. 5% of the NHL are all stars by the time they are 23. The rest need time to develop. Not to mention, counting out the Devils is so 1990's.

Oh, and JPP was a horrible Giants pick :p:

JPP had a great first year, though, and an all pro second year. Not sure what the comparison is.

How many times have you seen Tedenby play? This is an honest question, too. Most Devils fans even think the guy is a near-bust if he isn't already there. You seem to like defending him because I know you loved him during the draft year. Let me know when he is stronger than my 85 year old grandmother (who I think could push him around right now).

You said JPP was a bad Giants pick at the time, I'll never let you live that down:p:

I was trying to keep my opinion out of it as it makes no difference.

They are young(thread topic remember?), they both have shots at being Devils for the next few years along with all the other names mentioned. Like Larsson, 17 minutes a game at 20 yrs old, not sitting out anymore.

And I stand by it. I was not happy. The vast majority of Giants fans were not happy. Funny, because the MDZ pick is kind of the same way where a lot of Rangers fans were *****ing so much about not taking Tedenby (I liked him a lot at draft time, soured on him immensely after he -- IMO -- got worse the year after his draft). Worked out for the Giants, worked out for the Rangers.

Tedenby really doesn't have much of a shot, man. He is fast, weak, no hockey IQ, and no great skills other than a nice shot.

Josefson is the only one of the two that is debatable. I am really disappointed, but I am not ready to label him a bust yet. Tedenby is brutal. Larsson is also disappointing (and I will never let BenedictGomez down for saying he'd be better than Staal this year). Supposed to be the next Lidstrom. Far from it. He will be a nice top pairing d-man, but it's hard not to be disappointed by him.
