As of right now we have $ 13,620,715 in cap space available according to capfriendly.com with 19 players on the roster. If we do not sign anyone and just promote prospects we would have over $9 million in unused cap space.
I think Blake should work with that to acquire more assets. The Lightning are in deep cap trouble and some others as well. The Red Wings got a 2nd round pick to take Staal off New Yorks hands. With only one year left on his deal they can trade him at the deadline and gain even more assets.
There are still some good players on the open market like Hoffman, Granlund or Hamonic.
Offer one years deals, no real risk involved and get rewarded at the trade deadline.

Just because the Kings have cap space doesn't mean that they should use it right now. The Kings have more assets than they can handle right now, so grabbing a pick is not worth what it was a year or two ago. The Kings have to figure out who the new core is gonna be and build a team around that new core. Adding a cast-off can do more harm than good. If you add a guy, you want to find the right veteran who will fill a role or a hole. Otherwise that player will be taking up room on the roster and on the ice that could be filled by the new core.

Think a bit longer term here.

The Kings are loaded with prospects. They do have a lot of cap space now, but it is nearly doubled next year with huge chunks of dough coming off of the Kovalchuk and Phanuef mistakes.

Next year's RFA class is ungodly. The Kings will be able to dangle their first rounder. Next offseason, likely right before the draft, expect the Kings to make a massive roster upgrade.

Do the kings have an internal budget?

Until I hear/read to the contrary from Blake, I am going with not spending a single dollar more than necessary. All indications are the Kings have an internal cap.

Kings employees took a 20% paycut. Jon Rosen was let go. AEG is hurting with no concerts, no sports venues, no awards shows, no Coachella. Just nothing is going on with nothing on the horizon. AEG has to be hemorraghing cash.

Every unecessary dollar spent now means one dollar less in the future when we have our own RFAs and UFAs to sign.

I would take Louie Erickson from Vancouver along with a #1 next season (unprotected) and a #2 in 2022 for someone like Drake Rymsha to get rid of a contract. Sit Erickson in the press box this season or send him to Ontario and buy him out at the end of the year. He has a 15 team no trade list, so this might not work, but Vancouver desperately needs cap space. Then package the #2 to Seattle if we need to protect an asset in the expansion draft.

I imagine the kings, like most pro sports teams, are not going to be in the Black this year. So I think the kings will not do much with it.

In a fantasy world I would like them to bring in an Eriksson with a pick/prospect. Vancouver has a lot of short term ugly contract, and they're over the cap. It would be a good match. Hell even Sven B

I'm inclined to agree, as much as I'd like to use the cap to our advantage, we haven't had any indication from the organization that they are willing to spend money right now.

The need to get assets from taking on cap dumps is also not there. The kings have the best prospect pool in the NHL and that was before getting Byfield, Grans, Faber, etc.

Had the pool been bare like it was in 2017, I could see going for assets this way. Not now. The kings are also nearing the 50 contract limit.

I'd love to get a crack at a cheap Brock Boeser if for no other reason than adding an extra chip for when Jack Eichel becomes available..
