Who's the better player today?

Matthews most recent seasons:

2018-2019: 68GP - 37G -36A - 73P
2019-2020: 70GP - 47G - 33A - 80P
2020-2021: 8GP - 5G - 4A - 9P

Producing at 0.61GPG, 1.11PPG over the last 146 games, roughly 50 goals 91 points through 82 games.

Draisaitl's most recent seasons:

2018-2019: 82GP - 50G -55A - 105P
2019-2020: 71GP - 43G - 67A - 110P
2020-2021: 9GP - 6G - 7A - 13P
Art Ross(2020), Hart (2020), Ted Lindsey (2020)

Producing at 0.61 GPG, 1.41PPG over the last 162 games, roughly 50 goals and 116 points through 82 games.

What's interesting is Matthews is suppose to be the better goal scorer but Draisaitl has scored at the same pace, through more games in the past 2 years. Draisaitl also has more playoff points than Matthews despite only going to the post-season twice.

With the exception of the 2018-19 Season when Draisatil scored 50 goals and Matthews had 37 goals, although he only played in 68 games. Every other season since Matthews was a rookie he scored more goals.

2016-17: Matthews 40 goals, Draisatil 29 goals.

2017-18: Matthews 34 goals, Draisatil 25 goals.

2019-20: Matthews 47 goals, Draisatil 43 goals.

I think Matthews looks better on the ice given eye test , and better defensive play. But Draisaitls results speak for themselves. Until Matthews matches or comes close to Leons production, it's him. Matthews is obviously an incredible player in his own right.

Matthews is the better goal scorer.

Considering hockey is more than just goals though and that Drai currently has a very clear edge on overall offense - he's still the very easy correct answer to the question being asked.

In your unbiased opinion, who's the better player, bud?

Personally this one's tough for me. It really depends on if you can get over Drai's defensive shortcomings for the extra offensive prowess. It is an area I think he can improve however. I will homer vote for Drai.

If you take everything into account it's Draisaitl.

However I think it's wrong to bring up Draisaitl scoring at the same pace as Matthews since for their careers Matthews is at a 0.56 Goals Per Game, where as Draisaitl is at a 0.40 Goals Per Game.

Nobody said Draisaitl was scoring at the same pace as Matthews for their careers, you just brought that up out of nowhere and then literally just argued with yourself.

You said Draisatil has scored at the same pace as Matthews for the last 2 years.

In the 2018-19 Season the Goals Per Game for Matthews was 0.54, Draisatil was at 0.64 Goals Per Game.

In the 2019-20 Season the Goals Per Game for Matthews was 0.67, Draisaitl was at 0.61 Goals Per Game.

You also did not take into account that in the 2018-19 Season Matthews only played in 68 games, where Draisaitl got to play in all 82 games.

So when I look at those numbers I don't see how Draisaitl has been any close to Matthews in the goals scored department the last 2 years.

I take Draisaitl quite easily because

1. I think he's overall better
2. His cap is 3.2m less than Matthews'
3. His term is 1 year longer than Matthews'
4. I have more confidence he'd be willing to extend with the Habs than Matthews would

The operative word might be "today". Early in his career Draisailt was primarily a pass first player. To a degree he still is. His playmaking skills are absolutely first rate. But in the off season prior to the 2018-2019 season he made a conscious effort to work on his shot and to shoot more.

They are different players. Matthews is a shooter. He will likley always have a much higher shot rate.

Third times a charm, you might want to re-read.
I'm sure Matthews not playing all 82 games in the 2018-19 Season helps skew the numbers, because that season he only played 68 games.

Over the course of a full season when they have both played in every game Matthews has still proven to be the better goal scorer.

Last season you saw an example of that with their Goals Per Game since both played in every game and when both played all 82 games in the 2016-17 Season Matthews was still better.

Even in the 2017-18 Season with Matthews playing only 62 games his Goals Per Game was 0.55, where as Draisatil was at 0.32 in 78 games played.

Matthews is the better goal scorer through their careers no doubt but Draisaitl has clearly improved on that aspect and has kept up with Matthews in the scoring department for 150+ games now.

How many times do i have to say it.

Last night was a prime example of Draisaitl benefiting from Mcdavid. Both his goals were PPG where he just finished off a Mcdavid play.

Matthews also isnt horrendous defensively.

i think the poll just asked who was better, not about contracts and whether or not who would sign with montreal lol

Since the OP wanted to use the last 2 seasons as a base line and even though Matthews game winning goal was also scored on the power play, it should mentioned that in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 Seasons, Draisatil has scored 16 power play goals each the last 2 seasons, where as Matthews had 12 power play goals each in his last 2 seasons.

However when it comes to 5v5 goals Matthews has scored 35 and 25 goals the last 2 seasons, where as Draisaitl has scored 31 and 27 5v5 goals.
