He should make it to 5th by the end of this contract. He's destined to 500 at about 32 at his current rate of production.

3 more games in a row with a goal and he ties the Leafs' (modern) record consecutive goal streak (John Anderson, 10). Babe Dye for 11 straight games (twice) in a time when NHL teams had NBA roster sizes.

Career Goals Per Game, Centers (min 200gms)

1. M.Lemieux (1985-2006): 0.75 (915gms)
2. A.Matthews (2017-2021): 0.60 (358gms)
3. W.Gretzky (1980-1999): 0.60 (1487gms)

Utterly meaningless comparisons. Different higher scoring eras. Also includes Lemieux' and Gretzky's waning years. A gold standard for Matthews is a comparison with Ovechkin's insanely productive career (0.61 for the whole career, 0.68 in his first 5 seasons - 396 games). Matthews compares well so far minus Ovechkin being an unbreakable freak.

Since Matthews entered the league:

All Goals

1. Ovechkin 225
2. Matthews 216
3. Draisaitl 199
4. McDavid 195
5. Pastrnak 183
6. Marchand 175
7. Tavares 169

Goals Per Game

1. Matthews 0.60
2. Ovechkin 0.59
3. Draisaitl 0.51
4. McDavid 0.51
5. Pastrnak 0.51
6. Kucherov 0.50
7. Marchand 0.48
8. Stamkos 0.47
9. Kaprizov 0.45
10. Tavares/Crosby/Malkin/Connor 0.44

Even Strength Goals

1. Matthews 163
2. McDavid 150
3. Ovechkin 146
4. Kane 126
5. Marchand 124
6. Tavares 120

Insane that he’s already almost top 10. What a talented dude.

I’m curious where he would rank against other teams’ top 10. Is he just close to ours because we haven’t had a ton of great players in our history?

Having only five 50(+) goal seasons in the history of the franchise plays its part. A big number of the players on that list not being career Leafs factors in as well. Safe to say that Matthews is pacing to be one of the league's top snipers (all time) though. Hoping that he joins the likes of Ellis, Armstrong and Kennedy as career Maple Leafs.

72 goals in his last 83 home games

So glad he's ours.
I want to see this production when the games actually mean something and when opponents are bringing max effort every shift, every night.

For me, another Rocket would be extremely frustrating if it was followed up by yet another cowardly disappearing act when games are important abs opponents are trying 100% of the time.

Well it true. The was cherry picked and manipulated beyond belief. You’re including the production of 36 year old men to a 24 year old. The only thing that makes sense is to look at Gretzky and Lemieuxs clips up until Matthews age now.

Or as suggested by someone else, use every player under the same age frame. You have all these guys being compared, but only one of them didn’t hit the downside of his career yet. Are you even capable of understanding the flaw?

Yes, but a lot of that can be negated by the fact that Gretzky and Lemieux played a large portion of their careers in one of the highest scoring eras ever…

Matthews is the best goal scorer in the NHL right now but OV is definitely the best goal scorer of all time. It is incredible to think he could possibly win the rocket at age 36, pretty sure he’s catching Gretzky‘s record.

Not necessarily. Gretzky and Lemieux were arguably the biggest reason(s) for that time being one of the highest scoring eras ever. I'm of course not at all disputing that Matthews is off to an unbelievable start on the path to hopefully becoming one of the all-time greats in the goalscoring department.

Only 14 back of Teeder Kennedy

Also can a mod please correct the spelling of Auston, spellcheck:ha:

Matthews probably goes down as the best Leaf ever, but man is that ever a pathetic list for one of the most storied franchises.

edit: doesn’t help that most of our best players played before WWII. Charlie Conacher, Busher Jackson, and Syl Apps might be our best at each forward position, but they played too few games to crack this all time totals list.

The goal scoring was up league wide in that era. The average number of goals per game in 1981-82 was 4.0, around 3.7 by the end of the decade. It's around 3.0 on average over the past 5 seasons. In 1981-82, the lowest scoring team in the entire league averaged 3 goals per game.

Actually. I watched the series. And due to work, actually watched each game 3 times. If you can have to courage to watch the back half of that series and not call that a cowardly display, I don’t know what to say.

What, because he was slightly more engaged than Marner? That’s going to be the benchmark? Because of it is, then everyone is a playoff warrior.

Whst you need in the post season is for your star players to find yet another gear, and even higher level of effort and production. We’re trying get this faker to even just come close to regular season production.
