I've been saying this for years that the NHL is the only league in the world that doesn't defend it'se talented players.

Good on the agent to speak up. I hope Leafs ownership does the same. If the refs don't call games right, it's time to bring back the goons who will settle any problems. Is this what the NHL wants again?

Yes, you can move a player, but you have to box him out and get position on him. That is what the NHL told everyone I think after the 2005 season or whenever it was. You can be physical, but certainly not engage in an assault with you stick on his back. Does the NHL want to remain in the Dark Ages or simply desire a return of the Broad Street Bullies and start mauling guys in retaliation?

Auston Matthews' agent questions 'abuse of star players'

Take another look at the stiff cross-checks NHL superstar Auston Matthews absorbed from Montreal Canadiens defenders Shea Weber and Ben Chiarot in the final moments of regulation during Wednesday’s season opener while trying to gain a scoring stance at the net-front during a tied-up tilt:

The team will hopefully learn to play like a pack. It is going to be a fast, tough season with plenty of hate building.

The league absolutely needs to protect its stars though, regardless.

Its spot on, and it goes well beyond thr Leafs/Matthews.

For some strange reason the NHL is fine allowing its star players having to out up with this crap (especially from plug level players) even if they're blatant penalties.

I can't think of a similar pro sports league that protects its stars less than the NHL

Matthews would probably do well for himself and his safety level if he went absolutely psycho on a guy taking liberties once in a while. An unpredictable 6’3” 220 pounder is one who gets more breathing room out there.
True, doesn't work so well when the guy you do it to laughs at you like last night

This should not be a "defending the star player" debate.
This should be a "stop with the friggen cross-checking" talk. In no way should a players talent or ability determine how they should be treated. All players are players and the rules should be consistent

I don't care if you're Auston Matthews or a 4th line grunt, cross-checking should be highly illegal and legitimately penalized. I hate cross-checking and it's one of the cheapest plays in the game. Many many careers have been ruined with crosschecks.
Matthews should have had a penalty, Weber should have had a penalty, Chiorot should have had a penalty.

Agreed. Cross checking is technically illegal, but it happens crazy often and they basically never call it. What’s the point of having an NHL rulebook if it does not remotely reflect the way the refs actually call the game?

The final cross check by Chiarot especially was really over the top/brutal. If that’s not a cross checking penalty, what is?

At this point, it doesn't look like it's going to be called. So, you make them pay... either you have someone in the lineup to punch the crap out of people who take liberties with your players, or you make sure you do the same to their stars. I'd rather it be enforced, but if it's not...you gotta do, what you gotta do. Play to the way the game is called. That's when a Bogo, Muzzin, Jumbo or Simmonds has to have a talk with Chiarot.... That's when leadership, and talk in the dressing room has to come into play.

They all do it. What about when Sid Crosby hacked Marc Methot's finger literally severing part of it? Is that ok because it's Crosby who was the "assaulter"? There have to harsher penalties on anyone using stick as a weapon all across the board.

Sure. It's not right Sid did that.

But Sid also sells the game and the league makes money off stars.

Life is not fair.

Exactly.

This is why hockey was a better game when you could clutch a bit and you had people who took care of the rough business. Players should be able to police themselves and not worry about stuff like the instigator rule.

Player cross checks a star player= Enforcer immediately face punches.

Probably throwing the game away, last minute of a tie game you don't want to take a penalty. It seems the retaliator is the one who always gets called.

If we are lucky the refs then decide to penalize the instigator as well. Then everyone whines we would have had a PP. No we wouldn't have. The refs thinking is if you don't think it was bad enough to retaliate we don't think it was bad enough to be a penalty.

Thats right. Same goes for the interference rule that seemingly doesn't exist anymore either

I mean, he's right. There's no real reason to cross check a guy in the back full force. Guys like Parise and Zetterberg have been crippled by back issues because of all that abuse.

If you want to move a guy, put your arm on the guy and give him a nice shove. Or do it lacrosse-style where you bring your hands to the middle of your stick and then use your gloves to push.
