ASHL York - Terrible Refs

Anyone else have experience at this particular league.... ASHL York U (Toronto Area)

We just had someone on our team actually quit yesterday, because he can no longer tolerate the refereeing. The last straw for him, was after scoring a goal he was being punched at (gloves on) and he skated backwards, as far center ice, before shoving back and the ref ejects them both. We lose our leading goal scorer for the game (and season). I've written the league twice prior to try and address the refs having zero control over the players and not stopping things before they escalate and the response is always "we have the best refs....blah blah blah" I've been concerned over the health of myself and teammates in the past - slashes to the head (puck carrier!!!) not called.. a player running into our goalie head on in OT to score a goal not called and now one of the best players on the team has straight up quit.

Any advice or anyone have similar experiences? I'm beyond frustrated and now just waiting for the season to end so I can move the team somewhere else.

In the most recent game, the refs actually dropped the puck at center ice after a goal and our goalie had his blocker and stick still off. The refs noticed it mid play and just let the play go, no whistle... nothing... mind boggling. There are too many other obviously blown calls to list them all. Basically the entire fun of hockey has been sucked out, only because the refs just plain suck!

I know I'm only playing rec level hockey, but we also spend good money to have a properly officiated game. I can't wait for the next season... somewhere else.

It's like that everywhere.

In some even crappier leagues the referees will play favourites blatantly.

From my personal experience after playing in ASHL, particularly at York location is you have some good refs and a lot of bad refs. Nothing new.

The good refs will give warnings, talk to the players, and make calls. The crap ones don't do anything much......worse when you get two incompetent ones. At least if one is good, he'll make calls.

Taking it up with the league convenor or manager......pretty much gets you nowhere. :shakehead

Less than three minutes or so left in the game. Team-mate gets tomahawked over the head in our defensive zone. Our bench didn't see it cause the play was in the offensive zone when it occurred. He's out for awhile with a mild concussion. He spoke with the manager at the rink and simply told him this is not what he signed up for.....ASHL - Adult SAFE Hockey League......SAFE being the key word. :biglaugh: The offending player in particular had the highest PIM but was never booted out of the league. He was still playing after this incident. Pathetic.

Manager gave him the same blah blah.....team mate played a few more games - here and there and quit. After that season, I refuse to play in the ASHL particularly at the York location. Sorry, but once they have your money, they simply don't give a ****.

If this seems slanted, well sorry, but personal experience, what I've heard from team mates, and just the **** attitude from the people working in the office there....too bad.

I don't know what its like at the higher levels like A/B/C but when I usually chat with people at pickups and they tell me they play at York ASHL at level D/E, I laugh and wish them luck. Its not the level they play it that I laugh at, but the **** that goes on at that level, the bad refs, and hope to God they don't have anyone get hurt. If someone asks about leagues, I usually recommend them for True North Hockey.

I'll say the Markham Canlan was better in terms of refs when I played a couple of seasons there. Presently, play in private league and pickups with good core group of people. Sorry long post!

just like any business you need to punch them in their pocket, withdraw your team and join another league, we have done it twice now and found a league that has decent referees. at teh end of the day you are being reffred by guys who can hack it as bantam aa/aaa refs, they are just there for a paycheck. you can also complain about certain refs, get their name off the gamesheet and complain specifically about one person, after enough complaints they will be forced to do something.

Thanks for the heads up about ASHL. I was thinking of signing up next year but I think I'll pass.

Hmm.. I played in the lowest level offered during the summer (only level they had left on Sundays) and while I was playing well below my skill level I never had any real issues out there. I've heard of some teams that just go out and fight but at the same time I've never heard of anyone attacking a guy or anything.... Seems to need 2 to go type thing. No real issues I ever saw.. This was at Oakville btw

Welcome to the ASHL.

Some refs are just flat out terrible and get butthurt when both teams are constantly yelling at them. Hell, I've had "bonding" moments with teams we hate over some refs.

Some refs are decent/awesome.

That's the luck of it.

Thanks for the posts boys.. nice to know others have dealt with kind of stuff. I like organizing a team - hate handling this stuff though... so it's good to get some insight.

I've played in a bunch of leagues, all have there ups and downs and overall good fun leagues. ASHL (Adult "Safe" Hockey League) is the most unsafe league anyone on the team has encountered. My now ex-teammate that quit emailed me to apologise but is more concerned with his health and safety. He plays in 3 other leagues and feels the risk at ASHL is too high. My experience with head office makes me believe they are aware and just don't care. :shakehead

I agree with CornKicker and emailed them that I'll be taking my more than 7K a season team fee somewhere else.

We've also had one of those moments with a team we usually hate. I guess it's true that an enemy's, enemy is your friend ... To be fair there are a couple really decent refs - unfortunately they are only a couple out of so many more.

If anyone has a favourite league in the GTA, I would love to hear about it. I'm considering returning to Chesswood or True North. :help:

Obviously we have all had good and bad refs as players. As a ref, for me, one of the biggest problems is that guys get burnt out reffing the a-hole players. (I am in Edmonton and there are lots of good and bad refs.)

The two or three guys on every team that kill the enjoyment for the refs and everyone involved. Yes, your team has them, every team does.

Good example yesterday. Men's game, a little chippy, five minors called in the first 10 minutes. Next play, large player does hard rub out of player in the corner, I call it. On the way to the box, "For christ sake, how many penalties have you guys called, put the ****ing whistles away."

Each day like that brings one day closer to when I say, screw it, not worth it, too many idiots.

What happens when the good refs leave? Gong shows.

(Just a little from the other side. ;))

Agree 100% here. I used to not mind doing some adult league games here and there, especially in the summer, but I haven't done one since last April. Players talk **** to us and when I do it back they get offended. "Are you really talking back to me?" Uh yea, we're all adults here, right?

"You can't do that!" or "I'm reporting you to a supervisor!" Oh no, I'm so scared.

I play at york too. Like others have said some refs are good, while others are awful. I understand not having the best refs, missing calls, letting stuff like offsides and icings slip to speed up the game because you want to go home. It's when it's a safety issue that really pisses me off. Too many games I've seen get out of hand because the refs wait too long to make a call. When the refs call everything, there tends to be less rough stuff. I played at ASHL in Etobicoke, which I found to have far better reffing but the games seemed to be later. ASHL is still fall superior to Sports Village in Maple, worst run league I have ever played in.

My team left there about 6 years ago. It was a total gongshow and a league filled with heroes. When we played B it wasn't as bad as C was which was a joke. Refs had no control and it seemed like some of them enjoyed the chaos. I like tough hockey but at the same time I don't like going into work the next day with a swollen lip because some monkey can't keep his hands down.

Being up at the bar after we saw a few fights including one which finished with a guy getting dummied and the other plug doing the championship belt celly after, come on man.

One of our guys was pretty much given no choice but to fight. A guy came after him and the refs made no effort to break it up or stop it in addition to not kicking out this tard beforehand. Our guy is a good player who was drafted by the Knights whose career ended after serious knee and shoulder injuries. The other guy started throwing and my teammate threw out his shoulder, and for what?? We were furious after that and didn't come back.

That's thousands of dollars they've missed from us between summer and winter as well as bar tabs. So eff them. Mickey mouse for the biggest league in Canada. Find a smaller rink which doesn't have dozens of teams on a night with a convener who is accountable and wants your money

BTW both guys got 3 games for the fight..

And we also had numerous games where the refs were calling nothing just to speed up the game. No whistles when the puck went into the netting, called off icings, getting the timekeeper to run the clock, you name it..

ASHL is bad, but the Refs that run Bruces League at UCC for Hockey Toronto are just horrible. Bruce himself is probably the worst ref I have seen.

I always try to chat up the refs before the game, or during faceoffs. Helps sometimes, but other time they are just bad refs and liking me doesn't do anything when they are blind.

Completely agree - my main beef was with the lack of safety. If more small/medium stuff was called, there would be less escalation and less major incidents would occur.

I know that even good refs make mistakes (of course) but also know how to keep things from escalating. The psychopath ones seem to enjoy the escalation.

Sounds like you are good ref.. I'd rather see more small calls to prevent things from flaring up. Keep the a-holes in the box and I hope they don't cause another good ref to quit.

I wish these guys would be just straight up banned from the league. There is no place for that in non-contact adult rec. I sometimes wonder why other teams don't kick these guys off their team. We all have work in the morning - well maybe not that guy :shakehead.
