Jets acquire : Arturi Lehkonen 50% retention on salary

Canadiens acquire : Nikita Chibrikov + 2nd round pick 2023

Why the Jets do that :
They are in desperate need for a good 3rd line foward that can play the 200ft game and produce. Lehkonen is a versatile player that can play on the PK and in case of injury can play on a 2nd line. Great speed, great understanding of the game. Cost controlled player that is still on a RFA deal so they can resign him.
He is also the definition of a pro; Doesn't complain. Always show up and rarely has a bad game. Fun player to be around in the locker room as well. Chibrikov is not a must hit prospect with the Jets as their focus should be on the Defense or actual 3rd liners exactly like Lehkonen. Their top 6 is already filled and Nikita might not find himself a role with the Jets on the bottom 6.
Cons : Shot accuracy is a little off target sometimes.

Why the Habs do that :
Acquire the best value possible; teams might not be willing to trade away a first rounder for Arturi. Might aswell aim for a prospect that you'd actually like in your prospect pool and a decent pick. Nikita Chibrikov is a good prospect all around 18years old that can skate well. Habs are looking to add speed and puck possession to their team and Nikita fit that bill.
Cons : Chibrikov is a little on the short side.

Not too interested. The Jets aren't a Lehkonen away from being a playoff contender, and by the time Chibrikov is ready to come over and contribute the top 6 is going to look much different with some big deals expiring in 2 or 3 years.

Also the Jets don't have a 2nd this year anyway.

The Jets are better off keeping the young player rather than trading him for an older, bottom 6 player that is looking for a raise and doesn't give them anything they need.

The man couldn't hit water if he were stranded in the ocean. "A little off target sometimes" is flattery.

For all the reasons you listed I agree. Not a good fit for the Jets.

No interest from a Jets POV, Jets likely are doing a restructuring this summer between players and coaches……makes no sense adding a guy on a short term deal when having to pay assets for him. Jets are not in “go for it mode”, trade him to a contender this year.

Haha, that is brutal for Jets. Would not even trade Chibrikov for him. Let Canadiens overpay for him like they did with Armia.

Pretty much unanimously rejected for all the reasons listed above. Jets don’t give this a second thought before saying “NO THANKS”.
