Value of: Panarin @50% (5.82M, 1.5 years remaining)

The Rangers are stale and are handcuffed with some of their deals like Zibanejad. Panarin is a perennial 90-100 point player with another year remaining on his contract after this one. If the Rangers eat half his salary his cap hit is 5.8M which is extraordinarily cheap for what he brings. You would get two cracks at the can with him at a sub-6M cap hit and he hasn’t regressed the way Kreider or Zibanejad have - he’s basically the whole offense.

Edit: I’ll just put this here as well

I understand this would hurt the Rangers right now, but they do not seem to have what it takes to get over the hump and too many key pieces like Zib and Kreider and Trouba and Lindgren are regressing. Bread man at 50% has serious value, especially with two playoff runs at that price, and it’s the best chance the team has of retooling on the fly rather than either slowly fizzling out or blowing it up. I understand it’s a controversial idea - I just was curious to see what kind of value others thought he would have at 50%. The Rangers are in no-man’s land. Way too good to realistically improve through the draft while the core is still able to compete, but not good enough to win it all. In fact, Shesterkin masks a ton of warts for the team (and if you’ve paid attention, that narrative was exactly the same in the Lundqvist years). I’m not saying the Rangers are missing the playoffs or are bad. I’m saying this group isn’t good ENOUGH and this may be the cheapest you could acquire a 100 point winger imaginable. Seems like the Rangers could reconfigure on the fly and at least set themselves up for a second window, post Kreider/Trouba era, where it’s Lafreniere, Perrault, Fox, Miller, Schneider and Shesterkin as the core.

What’s the best package your team would put together? Rangers could use younger NHL or close to NHL ready talent, primarily at C or LHD, but open to best package available.

But isn’t this the Rangers window ?

Panarin says no. Didnt he have a bigger offer on the table but wanted to play for the Rangers?

5.5 years ago, yes. Players with 1-2 years remaining get moved. I am not saying it’s likely. But Rangers also likely don’t re-sign and need a bit of a retool. Curious on the value more than the perceived likeliness.

Pointless discussion because Panarin isn't going anywhere. Rangers are going to add not subtract one of their best players.

He has a full NMC for the entirety of his contract.

I know people think he's such a superhero because he puts up like 100 points a year in the regular season, but to the fans of the team that actually care about the team's results we are mostly pretty disappointed in Panarin as a player. It all seems to come back to the playoffs where he's been arguably the biggest culprit for why we've been close but no cigar.

Drury is a very ruthless type of GM. I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted absolutely nothing at any price to do with bringing Panarin back because he might simply not want him on his team.

Whether he'd trade him before his deal is up I don't know. He might want to, but think that it doesn't make logical sense, given the cap hit and what we'd get back at a time we are a contender. But don't mistake that for Panarin being some sure fire lock to play the rest of his career with the Rangers. The results have been mixed, at best.

In the off-chance he's willing to waive his NMC, it's likely a very limited amount of teams which will hurt his value. Only teams he might be willing to waive for are like Florida, Toronto and LA. I'd add Chicago if they weren't at the very bottom of the league. I believe he wanted to be in a large city with a sizable Russian population. Which is a pretty limited pool of cities.

even if the rangers wanted to move him, and he was willing to be moved, his nmc means he'd essentially have full control of where he'd go. so on top of moving a 100pt player and retaining 6mm of dead cap...you're getting pennies on the dollar as a return because there'd only be one bidder.

without considering anything the op said the rangers wont do this outside of someone giving them the farm. They will be at the top of eastern conference by seasons end and be a cup favorite. They will take 2 more kicks at the can with Panarin

IIRC his 3 options were Rangers, Islanders and Florida when he was a FA.

I can't see a way to make it work for Florida, realistically.

Florida needs another competent defenseman over a scoring winger

Team had a good start but too many key pieces are declining and the general feeling among NYR fans is we’re a first round exit being propped up by a goalie, at best.

Zibanejad has been terrible, but his contract would be tough to move. Kreider is also slowing down, but still good net front on the PP and has a moveable contract. Trouba probably requires retention but almost definitely gets moved before next season. Lindgren has been a great warrior but he’s just falling apart physically now. That’s too many important pieces that aren’t able to play to the same standards they did when the Rangers window was genuinely open. Panarin is not one of the problems, but he is the piece that would bring back the best return. That is the entire premise of this thread.

Man, I got some flack in this thread for someone who actually correctly has the finger on the pulse of his team.

Vegas, Nashville, Tampa, Florida, Washington, and Carolina are the only teams that have demonstrated anywhere close to the level of ambition/creativity to attempt something like this -- every other GM would complain that it's too hard or complicated and not even pick up the phone. None of those places have had issues with convincing guys to sign/waive for their location in recent history too.

Tampa, I just don't see the assets available, they already played their hand this summer. Nashville I don't think would be willing to double (triple?) down on the Trotz strategy after their awful start. Have a hard time imagining NYR moving him in-division (or WSH/CAR being willing to part with a Leonard or Nikishin in-division). Florida is kind of a combo of the Tampa and WSH/CAR reasons.

That basically just leaves Vegas. IDK what NYR would theoretically want the return package to look like though? Core piece for core piece? The entire farm system? The classic "young NHL proven players"? Some combo of all of those?

How about:
To NYR -- William Karlsson, Shea Theodore, Brendan Brisson
To VGK -- Artemi Panarin unretained

I think the cap math works to do it in-season but might be slightly off

Panarin would generate a lot of interest and carry a lot of value at full freight. At full retention, that interest would be even greater and his value would be even higher.

...but it doesn't matter. Kiss my no move clause. My wonderful, ironclad, no exceptions, no move clause in every year of my sweet, sweet contract.

Give out NMCs, and you give up flexibility, especially when you're one of the two or three top markets for NHL players that decide to do it.

Some quality young players are due big raises, but the players on big contracts aren't going to oblige and let the Rangers move them if NMC protection applies.

That doesn’t mean a move isn’t possible though. Just means that it all depends on what the player wants. That’s the part that we can speculate all day on and have no clue as to what the reality of the situation is.
