Would you be able to explain what these charts are saying? I mean, I get the individual categories, but I'm not sure how the chart measures them, exactly.

It looks like the darker diamond in the middle is the "average" NHL player, and every line out of that is a standard deviation away. So, roughly, Toews is 95% better than the average NHL player at scoring goals, possessing the puck, and getting shots on opposing goalies. So essentially twice as good.

At least that's what I think? That's why I study History and not Mathematics ;).

Do those spider Web charts indicate postseason as well????

Kane is money. Clutch goal after clutch goal.

2 Cups, 91 points in 93 playoff games and a Conn Smythe.

Toews and Kane are the constants. Everybody else is interchangeable. That includes Crawford and Seabrook.

Chicago is loaded with talent. Young, cheap talent.

People who are pissy are just jealous. Bowman locked them up because they deserved it. At any cost.

Let's revist the contracts in 5 years when the cap is 100 million and there are 15 million dollar players.

Ryne Sandberg 2.0

:help::sarcasm: not sure if serious

You forgot Keith, who is miles ahead of Seabrook OR Crawford.

At continued 5% growth, the Cap will be at $100m in year 8 of their deals.

It was a general statement exaggerated a bit.

This season, the Hawks top-6 players combined for almost 55 pct of the payroll against the cap.

The point is that for two pages people were saying how the contracts would cripple the franchise and Kane wasn't worth it.

2014. 6 players, 55 percent.

In two years, those same players?

2016. 6 players. 55 percent.

It's the Blackhawk way to do business. I think they know what they're doing.

If there are two players absolutely deserving of that kind of money, it's those two.

Kane is the arguably the best playoff performer in the game. Better than Weber. Better than Crosby. Better than Ovechkin. Better than Parise.

Pretty much. Center line is average forward or defenceman (forwards are compared to forwards, defencemen to defencemen) and then each line is a standard deviation in that category. That "normalizes" the categories so that they can be compared to each other.

For example, each SD in Goals is less numerically than in shot generation since there are more shot attempts than goals in a game. But normalizing to SD means I can compare how much above/below average a player is in each category.

So yeah, Toews is better than Kane at pretty much everything bar scoring on the PP.

goaltending and pretty awful drafting.

I will give you goal tending. It is really bad. Drafting i don't think it was good but i don't think it is what is ruining the penguins.

If they had cap they could upgrade the goal tender.
If they had cap they could get dept to fill in for poor draft picks.

The reality of a salary cap sport is Cap Space and Draft picks are gold. Everything else is secondairy with about 4 or 5 exceptions. Those being guys named Crosby Towes Malkin Ovechkin. Having one is a blessing. Having two is curse. They can't play every shift and you will always be left with holes.

If the penguins were killing it with draft picks and able to keep cycling in good young players on 2 way contracts keeping their cap space free... What happens when that contract ends? Ask Jordan Staal. It would be putting your team through mini rebuilds every couple of years.

since the 07 draft theyve pretty much only added depres, maatta, and bennett who have made much of an impact in the NHL for them. they have some nice d prospects now but theyve not added much over the last 7 years to surround their superstars.

2 years at 2.6M AAV. I think I would have given him that deal. He would have been a good replacement for Boyle and he brings more to the table so it justifies the higher price, although he'd have to play more to justify it. can't be spending 2.6 on a 4th line player which Ott certainly is not. He can also fight. Hmm, maybe not a great fit. anyways, good signing. Not sure how fast Ott is.

Steve Ott won't fight anyone his size or larger, he's a master of the turtle. I'm glad we didn't sign him. I've never liked him.

Dare I say that Stepan will at least be just outside the stratosphere of Toews in a few years?

I might get railed for saying that, but there is no doubt in my mind Step can make 65-75 points either this season or next.... He's still one of the best defensive centers in the league...

**** trading for another #1C.... Upgrade Brass if we're going to do that.

While Stepan is good defensively in order to be in an elite Selke category he really needs to win more than 45% of his draws.

And skating.

I love Steps but very unlikely he ever wins a Selke.

yes, i agree he needs those two things... but to say he won't be a top tier center is just silly. i'm baffled by some of the trade proposals for him... Guy's a great player, and some tweaks here and there will make him a consistent 65-70 point player
