But do you think they'll actually go to games? I don't think there are dudes from Williamsburg or the new-Bushwick who are gonna go down to Atlantic Ave to see the ****ing Islanders after the first season.

I think it's cool because I think the Barclay's Center is really nice and I'll be able to go see Rangers-Isles for cheaper than at the Garden and save 20+ minutes on commute. But if KC or Seattle came calling, the smart move would be to give the franchise to them.

The arena will be filled. First, it's so easy to get to from Manhattan for those on their way to Long Island. Can easily get to Queens. Can get back to Staten Island. Can get there from Brooklyn. There's enough people in Brooklyn who enjoy sports, and enough families who want to get out, to make it worthwhile (and I don't think it's going to be a huge arena for hockey seating-wise). I'll definitely take my son to an obscure game just to see hockey at a reasonable cost and ten minutes from my house. Grab L&B and a Brooklyn Lager at the Arena and I'm set. I wouldn't call myself an Islanders fan, but think it would be enjoyable to see hockey in Brooklyn.

One made a case for the Nets' success in Brooklyn, and one can make a similar case, albeit watered down since hockey isn't basketball, for the Islanders. The Islanders are also a franchise name that carries value. Many casual fans know of what they did in the 80s. The closet fans will come out. Can't say it'll be a rabid crazy, well knowledgeable (about hockey) fan base, but they'll be sure to schedule plenty of Saturday matinee games with crappy teams to fill the arena against those tough teams...if the scheduling gods permit.

The Islanders now have location on their side. They have a star and just need to become playoff relevant to fill the arena. If they get to that point, then corporate money from NYC will make its way to Brooklyn. It's such a short commute (it took me 15 minutes to go from my office on B'way and 21st to the arena for a concert, taking the subway).

I think they would generate more interest if they rebranded, which doesn't mean they have to change the name, but at least change the logo. They can bust out the old jerseys as alternates.

Takes me about 20 minutes from Grand Central - takes about 20 minutes to get to Penn Station also (crosstown train, changing trains, etc., or walk). And I live in Brooklyn so it's on the way home...and unfortunately there are more people still coming to Brooklyn.

Speaking from experience they can open doors and eat with their paws.

Cats are some sneaky creatures, my neighbors cat woke me up the other day... walking around in my bed. Conclusion - they must have transforming thumbs.

I toured Barclay's last spring and have no doubt that it will be a huge turnoff for hockey fans. At least 4,000 of the 15,000 seats will be bad for hockey. Real bad -- no view of one goal, seats facing in odd directions etc. Phoenix had the same problem at the old building and they were fine until the fans figured it out. Same will happen in Brooklyn.

On the first bolded: the arena will be filled if they are, at the very least, a decent team. If they continue the way they've operated for the last 20 years, and I don't just mean the lack of winning but the oft infuriating business and personnel moves that have alienated fans.... then Barclays will be a ghost town. After the first season or two, that is. I expect they will be a smashing hit at the start, regardless.

It will be interesting to see how reasonable the ticket prices are, and if they stay that way.

On the second bolded: You would be hard pressed to find a casual fan under the age of 35 who knows the Islanders as anything other than a world class joke.

I'm 45...don't talk to many under the age of 35. That's my problem these days - I forget what year it is and where I am. If the Islanders do suck, yea, the arena will be empty. Heck, most games I went to in the late '90s and early '00s for the Rangers were in an empty arena, even though the attendance was "18,200". Again, personally I'll never become an Islanders fan, but I'll definitely pay for good seats to see a couple games a year with my kid, and as I've seen with the Nets, non-sports fans have been going to the odd game here and there.

You don't have to apologize to me for being old and having an age addled brain.

But you should apologize to your kid if you plan on bringing him to Islander games. He is going to start thinking you do not love him/her.

On second thought, it hasn't happened yet, however, a CHI/Islander game would be nice and I can play it off as a Chicago game.

I actually have a polydactyl cat she has 22 toes instead of the normal 18 and she uses her paws to open things. God help us all when the cats start evolving.

Just watch that British time travel documentary series Red Dwarf; everything turns out fine...

:)

I think the Isles may be changing their whole color scheme to reflect those black and white deals from the outdoor game.
