This Kovalev retiring thing is really upsetting me, I'm officially bummed out. I don't think there was a player I loved watching play the sport more than him, he was worth the price of my ticket.

I don't get the Kovalev love. He was great in the 94 playoffs. Otherwise he never played up to his talent level, especially for the Rangers. He spent his best seven seasons on other teams and never even broke 60 points for us. He was either incapable or unwilling to transfer his abilities into actual games.

but but...he played the longest shift in history :sarcasm:

He was part of a team that brought us the cup so for that alone I love him. I also really enjoyed watching him play, he was beautiful with that puck. I know not everyone appreciates the skill guys or aspect of the game but I do and Kovalev was a real treat to watch play hockey. No one brought me out of my seat more than 27.

I appreciate skill. I just appreciate it a lot more when it leads to actual production.

You mean like a :stanley:

Everyone remembers the Messier hat trick against NJ but no one remembers Kovalev started the whole thing and assisted on all of Marks goals. He may not have lit it up in the regular season for us but he always showed up in the playoffs. Sounds like sour grapes from you that he put up big numbers elsewhere.

I could've sworn I noted the 94 cup run.

He was great in the 94 playoffs.

Huh, must've been the wind.

Yeah, it's sour grapes to note that people talk about him like he was Sergei Fedorov when he was never close to that level. I get that Kovalev was a very good and fun to watch player. But he gets an amount of love that's just silly.

Kovalev had 430 goals and over 1,000 points. To diminish his career because he struggled with the Rangers is crazy. To say you don't love the guy as a fan because he struggled here is one thing, but the guy was phenomenal hockey player.

He's among the first Russians to have their name on the Cup.

This is pretty good company:
Bill Guerin
John Bucyk
Owen Nolan
Tony Amonte
Glenn Anderson
Denis Savard
Doug Gilmour
Bernie Geoffrion
Gary Roberts
Doug Weight

Those are his comparables on Hockey Reference.

Problem is, if he was half as good with the Rangers (where he never scored more than 24 goals) as he was with other teams, he'd be a Ranger legend.

I'd take every guy on that list over Kovalev. He was an underperfoming Ranger. Twice. What he did on other teams makes it worse. Yes, he won a Cup in 94. So did Jay Wells. Anybody shed a tear when he retired?

Seriously, hockey reference needs to work on their comp system if those are the names popping up for Kovalev.

In fairness to Kovalev, he was very good on the only Ranger team he played on that wasnt a mess (in '94).

Some people don't remember how quirky and hilarious of a personality Kovalev had/has. That helped endear him to many of us... Especially those of us who were young at the time.

His pet troll and the broken English were hilarious to the 12 year old me.

His 2nd stint here was a true disgrace.

And his flying lessons.

But what wasn't a disgrace about the entire team during his second stint?

Good point. That environment and lack of accountability manifested itself to every player that came here.

Its amazing to say it for a guy with 1,000 NHL points, but I still feel like Kovalev didnt get the most out of his talent.

He didn't. His head or his heart always got in the way. He didn't even realize that his 7 minute shift wasn't a reward.

AK was one of the most talented players ive seen in my lifetime. hands, skating, passing, shooting, vision...he has everything. he just didnt have the desire to be the best..if he did, he would be a sure fire first ballot hall of famer.

Let's see how long it lasts with the 15 thousand seat capacity in that arena.

Really? The capacity is going to be a problem? They haven't broken 15k in average attendance in this century, and that's with a 18k person capacity at the Mausoleum.

Can you point me to one team that moved to an entirely new city because they were selling out too many games and needed more seats?

I wouldnt sleep on the Isles ability to improve their attendance dramatically.

From someone who grew up on Long Island, I can tell you its a helluva lot easier to get to the Barclay's center than it is to get to the Nassau Coliseum.

Also, don't underestimate the Brooklyn hipster crowd, who I could envision embracing an off the beaten path sport like hockey.

I can already ready see the vegan/gluten-free falafels and $12 PBRs.

Isles leg warmers instead of towels...'plaid-outs' if they make the playoffs..
