Yandle led them in points this year. Why would they go for a goon like simmonds? Just due to conract length?

lol are you serious in calling Simmonds a "goon"? He's a 25-30 goal power forward. Phoenix has plenty of defenseman. They need scorers on the wing. Yandle is expendable, Philly needs a puck mover, and Simmonds works for Phoenix from both a needs and affordability standpoint.

i dont watch the NBA, can you explain how it works?

In the NBA, every team that misses the playoffs is entered into a weighted drawing to land one of the top three picks. So essentially they run the lottery three times, once each for picks one through three.

ahh, so all non playoff teams have a chance to win the #1 draft pick?

i like it. tanking is no guarantee of a top 2 pick, or even a top 3 pick.

Yep, you get better odds if you have a worse record but every NBA lottery team gets a shot at the top three picks. The new NHL CBA actually made it so that every team that misses the playoffs has a shot at first overall, so all this would do is put the second and third picks up in the air as well.

As of 2013, with 30 NBA teams, 16 qualify for the playoffs and the remaining 14 teams are entered in the draft lottery. These 14 teams are ranked in reverse order of their regular season record and are assigned the following number of chances

250 combinations, 25.0% chance of receiving the #1 pick
199 combinations, 19.9% chance
156 combinations, 15.6% chance
119 combinations, 11.9% chance
88 combinations, 8.8% chance
63 combinations, 6.3% chance
43 combinations, 4.3% chance
28 combinations, 2.8% chance
17 combinations, 1.7% chance
11 combinations, 1.1% chance
8 combinations, 0.8% chance
7 combinations, 0.7% chance
6 combinations, 0.6% chance
5 combinations, 0.5% chance

Here's another view. Yandle does have a lot of positives, but he is also a turnover machine who saves his biggest gaffes for the biggest moments. Simmonds is much more than a goon. He's a prototype NHL power forward and someone who could eventually succeed Shane Doan as the face of the franchise. Both players have positives and negatives.

One additional element (me talking here) that may be in play is that the Coyotes seem to be willing to trade out of their first round pick. Philadelphia would love to add that pick to theirs and bundle them to trade way up in the first round.

“@DarrenDreger: Hearing Kesler to Anaheim is done. Awaiting details...”

“@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Anaheim will trade Bonino, Sbisa plus 24th overall pick and teams will swap third-rounders once deal goes through”

Great great trade by Ducks.

Sbisa is a nobody. Bonino is 26 and had his first 20-20 season.

Ranger equivalent would have been Moore, Hagelin and a late 1st they didnt have.

Kesler would have helped. Oh well, at least he stays out west.

And we weren't on his list. So it wasn't even a possibility unfortunately.

Im shocked at the plummeting value of veterans going back to last deadline.

Vanek, Moulson, Kesler, Gaborik, Hemsky, Luongo........none included 1st rounders or blue chippers. Well Kesler did but you get my point.

****. With two 2nds in 2015' Sather can acquire Ryan or Krejci at the 2015 deadline.

#SJSharks will use their compliance buyout on Marty Havlat. That is the only player they will buy out
