Because Callahan wanted a NMC/NTC--something he got from Tampa Bay.

Also, Gabby contract was well written--look back a page or two and you'll see that according to published reports, there are no cap recapture penalties if he retires early.

well written is a...stretch.

its against the cba to do the cheater contracts...there is no way around it.

the kings gave him term, he gave them a break on dollars.

exactly what i want the rangers to do with Stralman.

Happy for Callahan to get the long term deal he's been looking for. Glad it wasn't the Rangers that gave it to him.

Yup. Good deal for both sides.

Problem is that Stralman will get both ($ and term) from multiple teams. And probably more than the Rangers can afford.

Kane & Toews each looking for 12M a year on their deals.

To put it in context, thats roughly the same as Nash, Lundqvist, MSL, and Hagelin combined.

As talented as they are there is no way in hell any team much less the blackhawks could take a contract like that and somehow be competitive yearly.

One contract, yeah they would. Two... maybe not. But that's why the rule is in place. Holding onto both players for their whole careers is what the parity-hawks want to be impossible. Make them go somewhere else.

I hate this cap brings about parity garbage. Salary caps don't make leagues more competitive and they don't make franchises in poor markets more profitable. All the hard cap does is make the continuity fans crave almost impossible while putting more money in the owners' pockets. If a salary cap actually made things more competitive then more than eight different teams would've won the last 31 NBA championships. Shootouts and loser points are what actually keep an inordinate number of teams in the playoff picture.

If you force Kane or Toews off the Hawks they'll just go to a different big market team. In no universe is Patrick Kane going to sign with the Florida Panthers and make them relevant or whatever Bettman's fantasy is. There are too many markets in the league that need to not only make the playoffs but constantly contend for cups in order to make a profit. We're never going to see most of Florida, Tampa, Carolina, Nashville, Anaheim, Phoenix, etc turn a profit at the same time. The Kings won the Cup and had a parade resembling the line at Shake Shack.

would anyone consider Minnesota a top market?

A few years ago they got both the prized free agents and have quickly turned their entire franchise around.

Buffalo got every free agent to sign with them as well. lower market teams will have more money to throw at the big names. if you can get enough of them there, you can turn it around and MAKE it into a hockey hotbed.

Buffalo and Minnesota are hockey hotbeds and lots of these players come from there. It's a different situation.

Are you sure about that? For 2014-15, 9 of the top 20 salaries are in big markets, 7 from medium markets and 4 are from small markets.

The problem here is that you've had this weird, coincidental, swing of small market/big market success.

1999-2007: 16 SC Finalists. 11 small markets. 4 medium markets. 1 big market (Detroit)
2008-2014: 14 SC Finalists. 9 big markets. 4 medium markets. 1 small market.

We can't judge where players will go based on what teams are doing right now. It has to be based on what they're doing at the time.

I have really hard time seeing a free agent superstar going somewhere like Florida or Phoenix. I'll believe it when I see it.

not while they suck and have management issues, once that is resolved players will go there. lots to like, esp if they are winning.

Not at all surprised. Never liked those two. Toews was one of the hardline players during the lockout, and after Kane's cab driver beating incident, just really do not like these two, to put it mildly.

Great players, though.

I'm sure it'll even out after a few years as the cap goes up but still. $12 million a year? Daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

A letter from Gino Odjick: http://******/yvkaX #Canucks

About two months ago I was diagnosed with a rare terminal disease called AL amyloidosis. It’s causing abnormal protein to be produced and deposits are being formed on my heart. It’s hardening my heart and my doctors aren’t sure how long I have to live. Initially they thought years, but now they think it could be a lot less. I could be down to months or even weeks.

the problem with that 'context' is that nash blows, msl just turned 39 and most think hagelin is best suited as a 3rd liner.

if rick nash is worth $7.8 mil then kane & toews at 12 mil each is a steal

Eh, the NBA salary cap is not a good example. 2 or 3 players can make a championship team,, basketball isn't nearly the team sport hockey is.

I really do hate the salary cap, though.

Well let's look in the other direction. Baseball has no cap, but 19 different teams have won the last 30 World Series. Small market teams like Oakland and Tampa Bay routinely contend.

I don't know anything about baseball so :).
