Gaborik gets a 7 year deal w/ Kings - guess they liked his play of run and numbers...

No official $$ yet but about 5mill pr year is expected

7 years 4.9AAV for Gaborik per the trade board

Way too long, probably front loaded, recap penalty possibly, guy is an injury risk waiting to happen but he can also produce. Damn the Kings are going to be tough next year, possible Kopitar Art Ross incoming

Steal for LA. Long contract but they have a potential 40 goal scorer for another four-five seasons. By the time he's 39 five million will be nothing with the cap raises.

Aside from ELC or bridges, has there ever been a player to score 40 under a 4mil contract/50 under a 5mil? (in recent years when 4-5 mil isn't that much for a potential Rocket Richard winner)

No possibility of cap recap penalty if the deal follows the rules laid out in the new CBA. Dead cap space due to 4th or 5th year buyout on the other hand...

Love Gaborik. 4.9 is a steal. But not a 7 year term. That's just crazy for a 32 year old with his injury history, coming off a season where he only played 41 games due to multiple injuries.

I feel like LA got greedy. Will be surprised if he produces like that again in the PO's and/or is productive in the regular season in the next year or two. He went from borderline terrible here and in CBJ to prime Gabby in LA. The trade was a shot of adrenaline for him, see if it wears off or not.

That Gaborik deal will be frontloaded as much as it can under new CBA and he can retire early without penalty. So it makes sense.

$5m is a nice amount for a player putting up 25-30 goals per year.

I doubt Kopitar comes anywhere close to the Art Ross. He's not that good.

Deal is long, but I guess they way its structured its not too bad. Still wouldn't love it if I were a Kings fan.

Absolutely no way in hell.

Some crazy terms goin on here, but I didnt know there wouldnt be a penalty for early retirement.

thought the lockout was about fixing that?

The issue that the new CBA fixed was heavily front loaded contracts where the last few years the salary would be like $1 million. So someone would sign a 10 year $70 million contract but the player gets $65 million of it the first 6 years.

They took those types of contracts away so now the actual salary can only vary so much each year.

Amazing--there's actually a team that knows how to write a contract. Two Stanley Cups in 3 years. Can they make that three in 4 years? They're going to try and Gabby will probably help alot.

He's found a home.

I'm sure LA fans are not concerned with the length of the contract--especially because the contract is written to avoid any penalty if Gabby retires early. They're dreaming of winning another Stanley Cup or two over the next several years, with a player who fit very nicely into their system.

since 2008 he's scored 25+ only twice.

you gotta play games to score that many goals.

Players who aren't playing games are on LTIR. I don't think LA cares that much about the dollars themselves. The only season he didn't pro-rate over 25 is the lockout one.

Seems like this is the best a team can do as far as loopholes go. Well done, LA.

I wonder if he could have gotten a better deal $-wise elsewhere though. I'm sure some team could have offered a 4-5 year deal with a better AAV that would have worked in his favor if in fact he does only plan to play say 4-5 years.

again though...hes only scored more than 25 twice in the past what...6 years?

you can't count on him to score 25+ year in and year out...because he doesnt play enough games year in and year out to actually score that many goals.

He's made enough money. I'll take a slight paycut to keep having shots at cups and live a good life in LA...

Over tons of money to live in Edmonton... or wherever.

Gabby is a big reason why LA won the Stanley Cup this year--I'm sure he was willing to give up a little cash in order for another chance--or two or three--to win it all. Plus, all the LA players live near each other by killer beaches--pretty nice life style too.

Respectfully disagree.

Why were the Rangers unwilling to go 7, 8 years on a deal with Callahan, a player who is 4 years younger than Gaborik?

Because Callahan wanted a NMC/NTC--something he got from Tampa Bay.

Also, Gabby contract was well written--look back a page or two and you'll see that according to published reports, there are no cap recapture penalties if he retires early.
