They're going to be around for the next 3-4 years. They are now at the "one step back" part of having a competitive team in the cap era. They need to rebuild their fourth line and bring in the right type of players/prospects.

Never count Lou out.

Grandpa Lou is extremely overrated IMO. Trotz is the best part of that duo by far.

We will be a serious contender in 2-3 years. We have some elite talent and that is the hardest part of building a champion. Depth and balance will be added over the coming years. I like our chances.
So many teams have had elite talent throughout the history of the NHL and never won a cup. More likely than not, that will be us as well. Same goes for every team.

Islanders have been better than us for years, and will be for a few more years to come. We are in no position as a fanbase to gloat at two time semifinalists who are set up to make the playoffs next year. We are not YET set up to even MAKE the playoffs next year unless the expected BIG changes happen. Same thing for their fanbase when we were good but didn't win any cups either.

I don't think anyone would argue against that point, but we definitely SHOULD have a better chance to win it than most NHL teams in 2-3 years.

Yes they have been better, no doubt. I'm not gloating. They remind me of our team that went to conference finals in 3 of 4 years and a SCF. The Rangers had a good team, just not good enough to get over the hump. That's where I feel they are. Obviously with 32 teams the odds of winning are against you but if you are a top 6 or 8 team in the league then your chances are a lot better. We will see how it plays out.

Man, you must be fun at parties. We were ahead of Montreal this year but didn't play in the north.

NHL playoffs in not an exact science. I get why Leafs fans are frustrated.

Take 1991 for example as a Rangers fan. a Pittsburgh vs. Minnesota final. So you have your ex-GM (Patrick) leading a division rival to a Cup final against a team with a former high first round center who did nothing in NY but blossomed in Minnesota (Gagner), a young power winger we traded (Dahlen), and a UFA college D Man that has blossomed (Tinordi). And the Rangers as a team were much better standings and talent wise than Minnesota.

No, the entire nation wasn't rooting for them. As a nation, we forgive quite easily.

Nearly every Leafs fans that I know immediately starting rooting against the Habs in the second round. That's like half the nation right there. My brother and nephew (Leafs fans) both still have avatars of Fleury as their Facebook profile pics lol.

There is definitely a group of people that cheer for Canadian teams, but they're a big minority; most people cheer against rival teams like anybody else would.

It would be like a New York born Rangers fan cheering for the Islanders once we've been eliminated. "At least the cup will be won by a New York team."
