The NHL refs even out calls

giphy.gif

My take on refs calling penalties.
#1. They don't EVER want to be the reason one team wins over another by calling 8 for 1 against or similar. Rare, it is very one sided and looks very bad they are favoring one team.
#2. They also don't want to call EVERYTHING, because then there will be little to no flow in the game, time goes slower and game lasts longer than it should. (They wanna go home too, even if it is a hotel.
3. Even though they probably earn more money than I do, they don't make much......relative to what they do and how hard they work.
4. They are human, and do miss things happening so quickly.

i don't disagree that this is the way they think...but i HATE the argument that the refs are deciding a game if the calls are lopsided. the refs decide the game when they make bad calls whether that be calling a penalty when they shouldn't or letting things go when they should have called it...

if detroit is playing tampa and tampa has the puck 80% of the time and they get tripped 8 times and the refs give them 8 power plays. that isn't the ref 'deciding' the game. that is the ref doing his job...what decided the game and led to all those pps was the wings getting completely dominating leading to them taking penalties...

Lmao, at Jack Hughes. Dude has also been a huge dud the last 17 games only scoring 5 points after his big "breakout" start of the season. And that's with playing around 19 minutes a night...

He sort of reminds me of Scott Gomez. Great wheels and passing ability but kind of meh in most other aspects of the game. I think he will ultimately be a good player but pretty one dimensional. Kakko still has a shit ton to prove but he is already showing propensity towards a beastly two way game whereas if Hughes isn’t scoring he’s a liability out there

I find the Hughes mocking to be odd.

The guy creates offense every shift he’s out there. His stubbornness is really impressive - guy falls, gives the puck away or gets roughed up regularly and isn’t phased. Goes out there and tries it again. We’re dying for that type of creativity - outside of Panarin we don’t have it.

He’s got a lot of work to do to round out his game, but he’s already a good player. No, he’s not a god - but he’s a step or two ahead of Kakko right now, as much as we hate to admit it. And I see a lot more room for growth with him.

I think kakko has been as good or better than hughes. The numbers aren't coming but he's a beast on both ends of the ice and is generating high quality chances for him and his linemates regularly. His lack of production has been a product of no power play time coupled with flat out bad luck.

Hughes has been good..but kakko has been as good or better.

Defensively kakko is one of the few rangers I'm literally not worried about whatsoever. He's fantastic defensively...it's a complete 180 from last year.

Anyone mocking Hughes is probably not knocking him as a player, but more as a Devil.
As Ranger fans, we want to have the better of the 2 players. Needless to say, knocking Hughes doesn't raise what Kakko is doing and will do.
There will be no winner and no loser in this comparison. Only 15-20 years will decide if there may be one having a better career than the other.I would happily accept us having the 2nd best player if that means we win a cup or 3 because of Kakko's excellence.

He already had one foot out of the door, but i'm still surprised at how quick and deliberate the league handled it

They signed a moolah grande deal with Bally the gambling corp and are trying to dive right into sports betting. This is how I expected to go when I saw the clip last night. Tim Peel got wasted by a billion dollar industry.

Good point. Hadn't even considered that

yeah, that's the first thing I thought of when I heard the clip--my mind immediately went to gambling. No sports league is going to keep a ref who said what Peel said. It's too risky.

I know the mocking of Hughes is because he’s a Devil, but the comments have absolutely been pointed at his ability as a hockey player.

Whatever helps people sleep at night I suppose.

Problem solved! Obviously, it was only Peel that was doing this.

It’s such a bad issue.

When we play Pittsburgh and Washington I legitimately get disappointed when we get a powerplay. I know we’re going to f*** it up, and no matter how well we play, the refs will try to even up the amount of PPs and gift some to the opposition.

I don't find him that creative or even that skilled out there, its just that his skating is so damn good he always looks dangerous on the ice. He can always fall back on that. Kakko (and Laf) don't have that one elite trait you can point out. He's also confident and pretty aggressive, as you said, he can fail 5 times in a row but he'll just circle back and try again. I'd like to see some of that from our guys.

Not losing any sleep on Tim Peel being fired. I give a pass to calling penalties in the moment (it's extremely hard and arbitrary). Nor do I believe a ref ever has it 'out' for a team. However, Tim Peel was AWFUL at interpreting the rulebook on reviews, something there is little excuse for.

I'd love if this started a big crackdown on referee 'game management'. The egos of referees in all sports is an obvious issue, and don't wish to hear another referee memoir with anecdotes of 'reading the temperature' of important games.

Ideally, I'd love two linesman (normal duties) and one head referee with an earpiece directly to Toronto, where calls were primarily made by Toronto (giving on-ice referee to ability to over-rule stalemates). I know this is pure fantasy, so equally I'd be fine with all ref challenges to be handled 100% by Toronto with no review by on-ice officials.

Unfortunately, I'd make the argument of firing Tim Peel is going to have an opposite affect on 'game management'. It will only feed into the martyrdom view by refs as a whole. You removed a ref within the bottom quartile of performance and made him a sympathetic figure.

TL : DR: Screw Joe West/Angel Hernandez

I'm sure this is a unspoken( and spoken only amongst themselves) thing in the reffing community. I'm sure the league is just salty bc of the betting thing and the fact that everyone already thought this was the case and now its known.

Yeah, thats what i am saying. Anyone that roots against this kid, maybe really doesnt even appreciate the game. Honestly, I hope he does well, just not against us. As much as I dislike that org. I dont want them to be downtrodden either. Rather have nice rivalry games than pushover games. And for sure......I dont want him to have a better career and win more cups than Kaapo does. Have to show my fandom somewhere. Lol.
