I knew those Flyers problems sounded familiar and then that last line hit me "they've literally become the Rangers" and I was like, yes, that's where I know this from.

How did they get so good? Last year they sucked despite beating the Pens in the play-in.

Anderson has been a great pickup, not only bouncing back but looking like a better fit and Tofolli. has been off to a ridiculous start, as has Petry. Romanov looks like the real deal too. Their conference also sucks.

Development of their young centers especially suzuki.
So far all of their free agent signing and trades this offseason have been unreal. I thought Toffoli would score a lot and so far he’s scoring at a goal a game pace. Plus for all the crap price gets now they have two decent goalies. Plus their d is pretty deep if Weber stays healthy. Petry is just terrific.

We need a Josh Anderson type player or four lol.
I simply don't understand how the Rangers didn't pursue him. He's almost a RH Kreider with less speed. Better question is why would the lose him? Montreal went from a decent youngish team to significantly better w/Anderson and Toffoli who is absolutely wrecking the Canucks has 8 goals vs them alone! 9 total. Surely resurrecting his career.
Now has to do it vs teams that play defense. Haha.

Not Ranger related, but I think this grand divisional experiment is going to expose the type of hockey that wins games, and the ones that don't. The disparity is pretty obvious early on, unlike the regular regular season, you don't have those favorable match-ups to create a balanced sense of parity. Based on my tracking I would say the teams who are struggling with the following will be on the bottom tier quickly.
  • Out-of-shape goaltender
  • Bad defense 5v5
  • Can't score on the PP
  • Bad PK
You also have McDavid and Draisaitl who are only going to face one back-end that will play them hard, they are going to absolutely molest the softer defenders this year. Just caught some highlights, they are toying with guys out there.

The last (PK) bullet is not even necessary on its own because it already should fall under either of the first two.

Sup average

I didn't know Backes was in Anaheim and just recently found out Shattenkirk was there.
ANH fans already tired of Shattenkirk but you could have seen that coming. He has 1 assist in 11 games and is averaging a career-high 22:36 time on ice per game. The Ducks have scored the 2nd fewest goals in the league so far. Silfverberg and Deslauriers of all people are tied for the team lead in points with 5. Gibson has been great as usual.

Ducks aren’t utilizing him correctly, even before Manson went down, they were putting him on the top pairing with Lindholm. It’s setting him up to fail. He also has made the PP worse, which is very hard to do with Anaheim’s PP.

If Anaheim could have scored some more goals, not even a lot just a few, they’s easily have 6 or more wins now. That is because of Gibson.
