Leafs have a lot of talent but keep setting themselves back with bad decisions. Kadri / Barrie trade was trash for them. Sticking with Babcock for too long. Not being proactive about finding a guy to actually challenge Andersen. No diversity in the way they can win games. They can't win those tight checking games where the skill guys are getting shut down.

People see getting elite talent as the final hurdle in building a winner. The truth is that's when the real work begins. You need to surround those players with great depth and keep it coming while managing to keep things positive among the players.

Just so many bad decisions. They’re going to waste Matthews and Marner

Tbh they were partly boned by the fact that teams can’t hand out like 37-year contracts anymore.

Not to mention the Toronto hype machine probably got all of Nylander/Marner/Matthews an extra $1M AAV.

I’d definitely agree that after landing those three players their management hasn’t made a ton of great decisions. The Kadri trade was disastrous. Dude is a sleezy moron but that team needed him. This team should be contending right now not dumpster diving for like Vesey/Thornton/Simmonds.

Insane how top-heavy they are...

They should’ve kept Kadri and entertained move Marner rather than give him that massive extension. A minute eating defenseman and a 2-way forward or two would’ve been a better use of cap space. Too one dimensional and top heavy.

They also could have just kept Kadri and Marner while passing on Tavares. IIRC the Leafs had a top-5 offense before signing Tavares.

...but those PJs, man, those damn PJs...

The second the Leafs signed Tavares they should have dealt Nylander for a real good defensive d-man who can move the puck. Maybe someone like McDonagh...

That or they could’ve used Marner or Nylander in a Gaborik like trade with Columbus where you can plug a few holes.

Trading Kadri was also a huge mistake

I probably agree, although they still can do this. CBJ got Jones for Johansen, we got Trouba for jackshit. I wonder which defenseman would be available for Marner/Nylander.

Kadri wasn't making that impact they were seeking, and he always appeared to be a previous-era Leaf next to Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, etc.

I wouldn’t never have even noticed the helmet ads and...whatever other ads people are complaining about if I didn’t read people complaining about it.

The ads on the glass actually distract the viewer during open play. Helmet ads you won't even notice unless there's a close-up of a player after the whistle.

That’s exactly why it was a mistake.

They’re trying to build a team that is like 100% high-octane skillz.
