Reading this story on Mitch Miller who was drafted in the 4th round by Arizona and had a history of bullying and racist behavior. Apparently he's worked at making amends but I'm glad we didn't draft him. If I had known about that he would have been on my don't draft list.

Can one of our lawyers here or someone who watches a lot of Judge Judy explain to me why we (society) weren't allowed to talk about the charges of a certain Islanders' 4th line center, but Miller's charges from when he was 14 are free to be published? What's legally different?

And yeah, gross story. Lots of red flags there, but he was 14 when it happened. There's rumors that some teams were turned off by an apparent lack of remorse but not sure if that's substantiated. I don't think the Coyotes owe it to society to not draft a player if they feel he's worth the risk, or anything.

apparently the parents of the guy Cizikas murdered forgave him and recommended to the judge that he not be given jail time.

Yeah Arizona had like 2 picks in the draft so they had to try and maximize it by getting a 1st or 2nd round talent who fell.
But since its Arizona he'll probably never amount to anything and if he does they'll have moved to Houston by then so in the end they should have drafted a nicer kid for the karma.

how is an accidental manslaughter comparable to a premeditated and consistent (racist) torturing of a mentally disabled kid?

read this article and tell me if you still think this pick is ok: Coyotes' top draft pick, Mitchell Miller, was convicted of bullying Black, mentally disabled teen four years ago | News Break

thinking about this makes me f***ing sick. And yes, the Coyotes owe an explanation to society for why they think picking this reprehensible piece of shit is ok.

Maybe we get lucky and someone goes Tucker-on-Peca and we never have to worry about this POS after that.

I think Ken Campbell's article on Miller kind of sums up the situation for those on the outside.

The part that I'd like to know more about is whether Miller did formally apologize to the family.

But I will say from a personal level, that while all kids are capable of doing some truly baffling and hurtful things, there are some subjects that go a little deeper than that.

Mitchell's behavior is more than a costly mistake, it does display a troubling trend of depravity and abuse that goes beyond simply volunteering and apoligizing. Admittedly, that would have been a tough sell for me on draft day.

That is obviously a terrible, disgusting thing that he deserved to be convicted and punished for; but was it a one-off, or was there a pattern of behaviour?

If the reports are accurate, it would seem to be a pattern of behavior that included, but is not limited to:

1. Racist taunts
2. Physical assault (slamming his head into a wall, and other instances of violence)
3. Convincing him to lick a candy that was urinated on
4. Lying to school officials (according to the police report) and only confessing after he was confronted with a recording of his assult

I mean there's "kids doing stupid things" and then there's "this is a sick motherf***er."

Jesus. Okay, that's plenty enough for me. f*** him.

From what I've read, he never offered a personal apology to the individual he bullied or the family. Apparently he sent an apology letter out to 31 NHL teams ahead of the draft and allegedly sent one to the family too, but they said they never received any letter. Typical case of "Sorry I was caught". Has to be doubly insulting to the victim and their family to watch this kid even have a tangential shot of playing in the NHL.

Also from what I read/gathered from his thread on the Prospects board: He didn't act alone in everything, but his co-conspirator(s?) had owned up and personally apologized. Mitchell ended up in juvenile court over the matter where the judge singled him out as being particularly unremorseful for the events, saying he didn't think Mitchell got it/understood the gravity of his actions.

Sounded like there was a single incident that led to the criminal charges, but the associated behavior had been going on for some time.

Some people are just truly wicked and have nothing but evil in their hearts.

The natural state of the world is evil. I do not believe in the good of mankind. there just isn't any. once you accept this truth, you are better able to deal with the world around you.

Replace Graves with a Gordie Howe. The rest is accurate.

And I can’t help but to feel that it’s the parents’ fault, not the kid’s. Sure the kid is responsible too, but...
