Chytil, Kakko, and Lafreniere better pop off this season. Its nice to have these great prospects but we need to see them deliver. I don't care that they're just kids. When you are that blue chip status esp Kakko and Lafreniere you need to show it. And Chytil while not at their level is entering his 3rd full season.
"Better"? They're still very young. Laf hasn't even played in the league yet. Sure I hope/expect to see improvement from Kakko and Chytil, but there's still time. That's why a total rebuild takes time (and patience).

Pretty much exclusively due to cap considerations if the Rangers were to bring another 1C caliber forward they wouldn’t be able to keep Zibanejad, so then having a capable and cheap 2C would become imperative. This is were Chytil comes in and so I’d rather maybe overpay elsewhere (LD, RD or wings) short of the inclusion of “untouchables”.
I understand that this player could be obtained via the return from moving Zibanejad but if he’s moved without a new contract in place and with this specific return requirement - it could be a more difficult task than just simply holding on to Chytil.

What do you think of Chytil, I was really excited about his potential at first but I feel like he hasn't really lived up to it yet, but he's such a young player.

I think he has the potential to be a very good second line player. I do have substantial doubts that he has quite the right combination to be a first line player, and I’m still not totally sold on him sticking at center.

However, he was essentially a 20 goal, 30+ point player last season, and he was only 20 years old.

I think it feels like he’s been around forever, but the reality is that he’s only now barely old enough to legally enjoy a post-game beer.

Keeping age in mind is going to be critical with a lot of the young talent we have. We’re used to guys coming in at 20 or 21 years old. But recently we’re seeing more teenagers on our roster than any point in recent memory. There’s a big difference when we’re discussing 18 and 19 year olds compared to peers like Lindgren, Fox or Shesterkin, or even players like Kreider or Miller from yesteryear.

It’s also a big reason why I am really hesitant to start throwing rookie numbers out there for these guys. It’s quite possible Kakko has a production curve very much like Barkov, and Lafreniere like Huberdeau or MacKinnon.

In other words, you might see some 9 and 14 goal seasons, along with some 30 and 40 point campaigns before you really start to see visions of the future. And we can’t be completely freaked about that happening or jumping to rapid conclusions if it does take place.

.

This is a big year for Chytil. I think he likes to shoot so having a Laf or a Kakko dishing the biscuit to shoot could result in a high goal number. For Center, I don’t think he sees the ice too well or he’s young and not mature enough to slow down. He seems to be in rush to get up ice.

Am i missing something? 6 goals in 56 nhl games? after some underwhelming college numbers? a former 6th round pick?

Hes a defenseman so 6 goals isn't bad.

I expect his offensive production to drop though. However, as far as playing the position goes, hes already already a good defenseman. If he maintains his current level that contract is fair, even with a dip in offensive production.

It's a risk, but not a crazy one.

Even if it doesn’t work out, it will still be easier to deal with than if a similar contracts given to failing 30+ y/o.

This is similar to the Skjei deal except it is cheaper and Marino had a better year last year than Skjei ever had. (For clarity I did not like the Skjei deal at all - or well I said it was "fine"). I think he could keep up the offense though. He's probably going to get PP2 time and the Pens like to troll and take Letang off PP1.
