Ottawa just picked 7 times in the first three rounds this year, three in the top two rounds last year and still have an extra second (which should be high) next year. They are getting Stepan on a steep discount and they can easily flip him at the deadline if need be. The older I get, the less interested I am in the long term view.

It's amazing how many times we hear about these deals where you can "flip him at the deadline" and it basically never happens as intended.

They are not getting him at a steep discount (in terms of assets). It's arguable if he's even worth a second. He's a defensive third line center these days.

Reactions: Rangers ftw
McQuaid and Namestnikov are the first two I can think of - both of which were traded for less than were originally acquired for. I assume there may be some examples to the contrary but nothing I can think of off the top of my head.
Yep, you had it right, that is truly amazing.

If the Senators get Stepan for the better part of the year, have him around their young roster, and get mostly the same return they gave up, they'll be happy with that. As I'm sure the Rangers were happy when they did that with McQuaid.

If Step has a good year playing with Dadonov, Stuetzle, Tkachuk, etc. he’s probably worth a 1st at the deadline to a contender. Retain half and his prorated hit is tiny. Teams can add a solid vet, leader, scorer and two way guy at the deadline.

This. They can turn a 2nd into a 1st

Awfully optimistic to think Stepan is going to return anything close to a first round pick at the deadline...He has 28 and 35 points the last two years. He may not even be in the top six in Ottawa because Norris/White certainly can end up ahead of him in the lineup. Not to mention if issues don't get sorted out with the border the trade market is going to be awkward.

namestnikov was traded for cap relief not for the return. so that situation changed due to the cap...if we had kept him who knows.

as for mcquaid, he is always brought up but what exactly did people expect? we traded Steven Kampfer, 2019 4th 99th overall (Cade Webber) and a 2019 7th 216th overall (Jake Schmaltz)...then we got 36 games out of McQuaid and flipped him for Bergman, 2019 4th 112 overall (Hunter Skinner) and 2019 7th 205th overall (Eric Ciccolini)...so the 'cost' for 1/2 season was moving down 13 spots in the 4th and moving up 11 spots in the 7th. a virtual wash meaning it cost us nothing. and we got better player in both the 4th and 7th round. how is that brought up as the constant example of a bad rental deal?

while it’s a possibility it’s more of an unlikely cherry on the top.

Likely thinking is what @Leetch3 and others described: mostly even assets cost to the organization for a a significant cash savings vs cap hit, lineup protection for youngsters and a true veteran leadership. To this last point - being a vet doesn’t always implies veteran leadership which in this case differentiates Stepan from anyone available “for cheap” as a UFA.

To be honest id think Stepan could resign with Ottawa if he were interested in staying there. With all the young players they could use him to bridge the age gap. I see they are about to sign or have signed Stutzle today, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have Step around for a while.

Stepan was slowing down. His problem is when the game shifted to total speed in 2015-16 (aka the year the Penguins won the Cup with their "speedy NFL secondary" defense) he already wasn't fast and now the game is so much faster.

We'll see if he has a resurgence with some young legs driving the play.

I can absolutely see Dorian selling him at the deadline if Ottawa is out of it. That team will live and die with Matt Murray's health.

Arizona is a mess, i wouldn't put much stock in what players do there. Stepan has a different skating style that looks awkward but he isn't exactly ploding like a Thornton. He actually took some weight off before the reset and was probably their best player in the play in, not sure if you watched them, but he really looked like he did in playoffs for us imo.

Warren Buffett was once asked how he felt during a recession with a down market, he said "like an oversexed man in a harem". That's how I feel about this season and the prospect of watching a team that figures to at least be decent.

Gorts and co are very good at this. Steve Dangle's trade tree on Nash is another example. Dangle's doing great work, really liking the guy. But yeah, if you look at the Nick Holden trade, they got a third, took Joey Keane, and then turned that into Julien Gauthier.

A 2018 rental, nets a 3rd, you get a prospect that has been rising for a couple of straight years, trade from a position of strength to get a 2016 first with pro development years. The two 7ths for Vierling was a nice touch. That was helped by Marec Mazanec.

Keith Yandle's trade rights helped get Morgan Barron. They do a really good job of getting the most out of trade chips. Just wish they took Levi instead of Ollas. That would have been from the Cody McLeod pick.

Rangers got Tyler Wall as well.

Tyler Wall and Morgan Barron for a player who was weeks away from walking as a free agent

Yeah man, didn't even realize that-> hey you should totally post Ranger trade tree pieces. Guarantee you will get hits. Do it before one of these other guys get on it.

I don't have the expertise to make those videos LOL. But hey, if someone wants to help, I'm down with doing the research and narration

They also used the 4th from that trade to acquire Nick Holden, thet got a 3rd for Holden, drafted Joey Keane with that pick, then traded him for Gauthier.
