Wow, Stepan traded to the Sens for a second rounder.

That must be really really hard for him
and his family. Arizona now Canada, with the border issues. Tough one.

Always loved Step, good luck to him

I imagine Ottawa is a safer place to be right now over Arizona. Colder, but safer. Say his linemates are Stuztle and Dadonov, could be a good year for D-step.

Stepan $6.5MM cap hit but only $2MM dollars. Nice trade for Ottawa. Arizona gets Columbus’ 2nd. Sens keep their own and San Jose 2nds. They have draft choices to burn.
But why burn a 2nd here? They aren’t competing this year. Those 2nds are valuable. Did they want leadership? You could find that in free agency for cheaper and you keep your 2nd round pick. The Rangers traded (2) 2nds for Adam Fox. Not saying there is another Adam Fox out there, but the draft capital has more value than Stepan for 1 year as a rental.

Last month, Melnyk said that they have turned a corner and will be buyers at the deadline. So...in the mind of the Senators...they are competing and will overpay for pieces as such.

Truly laughable tho. They aren't going to be competing for anything.

True, I did hear about what Melnyk said on Sirius. You’re right let them make stupid moves with their assets.

They likely recoup the second at the deadline from some club replacing a last minute injury and we all know there will be plenty of those with so many heated games . Decent deal for Ottawa....Stepan might have a good year in a hockey market .

not for nothing but Stepan has leadership (I guess), plays a coveted position, can play all situations, and is still a good player. Having good players is pretty important for rebuilding teams, like Edmonton consistently proves.

Fair point. Just feel like Ottawa gave up more than they should have here. Also a fair point by @leetch99 that they could potentially recoup that 2nd at the deadline, although the CBJ 2nd might end up being a higher pick than the one they acquire from a playoff team.

Only giant question mark is the viability/restrictions of the trade deadline this year. Will free movement of players be tenable, or will they be subject to quarantines?

so if he’s owed $2 million, come the trade deadline it’s likely less than $1 million left. Where is he going? Gee, a 30 yr old veteran center with fewer miles on his legs after a shortened season. Hmmm

Good question yet i’m guessing by the deadline all the players will have received the vaccine.

Not sure I agree. I can see the logic of the move from OTT’s perspective. Give up a 2nd for a 2/3C (on their team) who makes $2M in real money. Cap hit doesn’t matter to them anyway since they’re not a cap team.

Stepan can come in and add some leadership and insulate their young players by playing tough minutes. Maybe he has a Renaissance. He’s only 30. Even if he plays on par with how he’s been trending, you still have a tradeable asset at the deadline. Maybe you have to downgrade from the 2nd you gave up to a crappier 2nd, or a 3rd, but that’s a small price to pay to stabilize your team and help develop your youngsters.

Hell, maybe things work out great and you end up resigning Stepan to a cheap 2 or 3 year deal to bridge the gap to your contending roster.

OTT is maybe a year behind us in their build. They’ve had a ton of picks the past couple years, and they’re at a point where they can trade some draft capital to fill in holes, even temporary ones. Everyone wants to rush to proclaim who wins each trade, but I think this trade makes perfect sense for both teams.

Someone would have given up at least a 3rd for Stepan at the deadline. Is it really that absurd that OTT, who has trouble attracting FAs, gave up a 2nd for a full year Stepan? I really don’t think so.

Tough for Step, being shipped off to arizona and then basically sent to the Siberia of hockey teams in Ottawa

Rangers sold high on him thankfully

True enough...it is OK if you got a piece in a deal you will retain for the next season but if it is short term and there is isolation time involved....yep....different ball game altogether .

Ottawa just picked 7 times in the first three rounds this year, three in the top two rounds last year and still have an extra second (which should be high) next year. They are getting Stepan on a steep discount and they can easily flip him at the deadline if need be. The older I get, the less interested I am in the long term view.

Its a heavier price than you'd expect on the surface, but Ottawa has had literally nothing but picks recently and the 2021 draft sucks balls. At some point, you need to try to take a step forward and at the very least, Stepan has a shit load of experience and isn't a complete dud (not yet anyway.)

If Step has a good year playing with Dadonov, Stuetzle, Tkachuk, etc. he’s probably worth a 1st at the deadline to a contender. Retain half and his prorated hit is tiny. Teams can add a solid vet, leader, scorer and two way guy at the deadline.
