Well that's you Edge. I know I'm not alone in this belief of mine far from it. Not sure how old your are or if you were around as I was in the early to mid 80's while Islanders were torching us on the way to winning their Cups but and maybe this is a flaw of mine but I haven't gotten over it and I never will either and that's OK.

I don't lose sleep about it nor has my life been effected by it. However when I see a Ranger fan rooting for the Islanders to win a Cup, I'm sorry my friend but it just doesn't compute and it never will.

A lot of people on this board are younger and have no clue what it was like around these parts when the Piles were winning cups in the early 80's. It was brutal and I totally feel your pain. They just see the Isles as an afterthought after nearly 3 decades of failure. I guess you had to be there to experience it. Isles fans are even arrogant now in their 1st trip to a conference finals in 27 years yet they were very quick to point out the Rangers never won the cup and it was no big deal even though they went to 3 conference finals in 4 years. The Isles fan base is one of the most arrogant and delusional I have ever seen so again I feel your pain. The Isles are my number one hated sports franchise AINEC. I would rather stick a fork in my eye and bleed to death than watch them win another cup in my lifetime.

They're already without Stamkos how many more breaks can the Islanders possibly get. It would have been nice if he we had like 1/5 of this type of luck on our runs to the ECF

Agreed. I guess in fairness Price missed the rest of the ECF after game 1

Tokarski was awesome in that series, Price really couldn't have played much better.

And if it had been like this where we were totally outclassed the first two games but only won because Price was out, it would have been a much different story and we never would have heard the end of it.

Hell we still don't hear the end of it whenever Rangers and Habs fans cross paths on the mains

If you grew up on Long Island and played hockey there you had a bitter rivalry with your buddies. He’ll my own brother is a devout islanders fan. It was very much 50/50 isles rangers even as the islanders were awful for the late 80s 90s and 00s. You hated them and their fans hated our boys. To ever ever give an inch would be defeat. To root for them to beat anyone ever is just forbidden. Maybe for the younger guys here it’s different but I’d have to imagine anyone in their mid 30s and older would feel the same way. If you told me we’d get Lafreniere but the islanders win the Cup this year I think I’d pass on Lafreniere and take my 10th overall pick. And I’m serious.

I'm a generation younger, and while I was a hockey fan my whole life (my earliest memory is when we beat the Panthers in that playoff series and Tikannen hit the camera in the net), I really only got devoutly into hockey and understanding the game beyond what I just saw on TV or on the ice at games coming out of the lockout (I had a weird infatuation with Sidney Crosby since he was just slightly older than me before I grew to hate the Penguins), so all I've ever really known of the Islanders is that they have largely been irrelevant, not even worth thinking about, except for a short period when DP was on top of his game and his rivalry with Lundqvist, and up until recently the Devils have always been my personal biggest rival.

That also has a lot to do with me growing up in NJ, that crazy win streak Brodeur had against us in the early 2000's, and all my Devils fan friends were also Yankee fans, me a Mets fan, which made it exponentially worse.

The extent of my rooting is pulling for McDonagh to get a Cup. I have more interest there than wanting the Islanders to lose out of hatred for them.

It also extended far beyond the rink. I remember wearing a Ranger jacket and hearing it wherever I went. The peak Rangers-Islander rivalry was as nasty as I've ever seen anywhere. That's New York, though. I did what I had to do and rooted them past Philadelphia (not that hard for me) but frankly, I hope they lose to Tampa in 3.

this is the thing. It went way past what happened on the ice.

Glad to read some of my brothers in here who are old enough to remember are chiming in now about what I was talking about before and that rooting for the Islanders to have anything good happen to happen for them let alone root for them to win a Cup, is simply blasphemous on as big a scale as one can think of.

And it really does have to do with what I eluded to earlier and which @Kovalev27 and @PuckLuck3043 are reiterating which is the rivalry between the two fan bases was as heated and volatile as anything anyone who is younger than 35 can possibly imagine.

When the Islanders were winning all those Cups and beating us on the way, there would be around 25 of us who were close friends up at SUNY Brockport with 1/2 of us Ranger fans and 1/2 Islander fans and when playoffs started every year, we would all pretty much barely even talk to one another for the amount of time both teams were alive which for the Islanders was pretty much for 2 months straight.

The amount of verbal abuse and trash talking that went on was ridiculous and there were a few times the abuse got a bit to much and fists began to fly...that's how intense the rivalry was. I know some of you younger Ranger fans can't fathom what I'm talking about but trust me the hatred between fan bases was as intense as any in all of sports.

I hope that it gets to that point again so some of y'all will experience it because that will mean the Rangers will have turned the corner and we will be in the playoffs competing for Cups year after year and the Islanders will be just one more obstacle in our way....here's to hoping!

I grew up in Bayside & started playing roller hockey around '82. At that time kids wearing Ranger jerseys were outnumber around 4-1. The abuse we took after the playoff losses in '82, '83 & '84 was vicious.

'84 was particularly brutal after the Rangers rolled in Game 3 for a 2-1 lead in the series with Game 4 at MSG. Watching them lay an egg at home & then that OT loss in Game 5 was crushing for a 12 year old. Showing up to school the next day was not fun.

When the Oilers finally spanked them in '84, I celebrated like the Rangers won. Thankfully that was the last time that the Isles were relevant or serious contenders.

I agree tokarski played great and I still think we win that series regardless

Yeah as a younger guy who grew up in the 90s/2000s the Devils will always be my number one most hated team in all of sports. But the Isles are a close 2nd. Such a horrible fanbase, I never want to see them have an ounce of success.

The Rangers won back-to-back draft lottery's. We, as Ranger fans, can no longer bitch about their 'bad luck'

Well i'd rather have a cup or 2 but yes, our luck has been pretty insane the past few seasons. Beyond our own lottery balls, we got really lucky in 2017. I was so mad when the Devils and Flyers got the 1st 2 picks. Imagine if they had taken Pettersson and Makar/Heiskanen? Dodged a bullet there. Just need the Lightning to finish the job and this Return to Play scenario couldn't have turned out better for us. I'm just worried about Point.

When is Gorton going to get some GM love? He turned this franchise around in 3 years from worst prospect pool to best.

What has he done to get the love?

He had a very successful team and never did anything with it except f*** it up to the point where he had to tear it down and forced himself into a rebuild.

He's put some decent pieces together by nothing other than pure luck in the draft lottery.

You need to accomplish a whole lot of sucking to pull that one off and I won't even get into coaching and rushing players into roles they aren't ready for lol.

This guy's got a whole lot to prove in my eyes..
