This isn't the thread for this, but just look at our team now, our best players this season: Panarin, Zibanejad, DeAngelo, Fox, Strome... none were drafted by us. We're lucky we can sign FAs and make good trades because if we relied solely on drafting like Vancouver or Winnipeg our rebuild would be in big trouble. And its not just drafting, I think something really stinks with our player development.

This is debatable. You build a team through drafting, trades, and free agency. Since Gorton has been here the only pick that you can say was a bust is Lias. We have some recent draft picks with plenty of potential; Igor, Chytil, Kravtsov, Kakko, LAF(soon to be), Lundkvist, Miller, Jones, Robertson, Barron, Henriksson, and more. This team's future is really bright.

are we posting about the draft history of the team or did you drag your dip(blank) hat out of the laundry?
Well then in 1990 they got Weight in the 2nd, Zubov in the 5th, Nemchinov in the 12th. Kovalev in the 1st in 1991. Norstrom in the 2nd in 1992. Sundstrom in the 1st in 1993, Marchant in the 7th. Looks like we're doing just fine.

Also, you can say shit now.

well, from 1998 to 2004 they squandered
Malhotra at #7
Brendlnat #4
Lundmark at #9
Blackburn at #10
Jessiman at #12
Montoya at #6

so the team does have a history of early misses. Lias isn’t looking too promising either. We’re hoping Kraskov makes an impact

That’s a completely different front office from as much as 22 years ago. That’s like comparing 1998 to what the team was doing in 1977.

Many of the people we want to hold accountable came on starting in 2004 and 2005. The difference between 2005 to 2012, versus 1996 to 2003 is night and day.

McIlrath is a clear miss. But his draft position isn’t the only reason why he stands out when looking at that lineup of first round picks between 2005 and 2012. It’s because a lot of them were really good picks.

Andersson D+1 and D+2 seasons were on par or better than most of the players picked after him. D+3 was a disaster after a promising start.

So again, assuming we don’t go back three decades, what would this team’s drafting win-loss record be from 2005 until now? Even taking into account four years or no first round picks. It’s not anywhere close to a losing record.

Yeah, one Cup in almost 70 years indicates the Rangers were killing it at the draft table.

Since the lockout, Rangers have done a good job of getting an NHLer (and generally a solid one) out of every draft. We've also done a good job of acquiring talent via trade and free agency before they hit the NHL. What we hadn't done for a while is get someone who turns into a star (although hopefully Shesterkin put an end to that, and of course now we have very high draft picks).

I don't think HFNYR will ever forgive the Rangers for 2010 when the board collectively went crazy for Tarasenko and Ryan Johansen, but we came away with Dylan McIlrath.

On topic, Bozo is straight up killing it for Vancouver.

@EdJovanovski I hope you like your onion rings.
This popped up the day he was traded to Tampa

Once he finds an onion ring spot in Vancouver it will only be a matter of time before his demise

didn’t know you were comparing front offices. His drafts were so/so while some of his FA spending was atrocious. So atrocious he lost valuable pieces to competitors which offered opponents more value.

But even if that’s true, it has nothing to do with the people presently in our front office and scouting positions.

You know what I find encouraging on top of the moves they’ve made? It’s the moves the tried to make. It was targeting Keller in 2016. It was knowing Pettersson was the stud player in 2017. It was knowing Zegras was the center to grab had they remained in the six spot.

That tells me this group isn’t shooting in the dark. And it also gives me hope that years from now, they’re going to keep tabs on guys so they can pounce on the opportunities to get the next Fox, or ADA, or Zibanejad. Even if they weren’t in a position to draft them at 18.

scroll up one please - did not know you were comparing regimes.

Best sign was the letter to fans about the rebuild. Most accepted it while the same who want Hank to last forever b/c “he’s done so much for the organization” wanted to keep Zucs, McD, etc.

A lot has gone right with an emphasis on Kakko and Fox with ADA getting his act together. Otherwise, the other pieces aren’t here yet and some need to show better awareness on the ice. They’re young though, Panarin was just money and we’ll see how good a move Kreider was. A modified trade clause was very nice to learn. Some of the picks i like while reaching for Lindbolm (goalie) in Round 2 made me shake my head.

Team looks good but the kids have to hit and hopefully the front office will remain patient. I feel better with JD in this role than i would with Sather.

amazing how Binnington went from an overnight brick wall to the bench so quickly.
This is why commiting long term to a goalie is just insanity in this NHL. Murray, Binnington, Holtby, all cup winners and now you don't even hear about them and when you do, it's because they are bad.

Flyers are 5 games into a series where they've gotten smashed on possession, given up a ton of shots, and are trying to ride a hot goalie to a series win.

Where have we seen this before?

I've been so behind and watching all the games on tape delay, but I just finished the VAN-STL game and the only two things I can say about it a that 1) Robert Thomas is a special offensive player that in no way resembles Toews as I heard throughout his D+1 season and 2) Vancouver is a couple years away: they need to lose some dead weight--especially their HC. I'd be curious to see what that team can do with Gerard Gallant as their coach

Some would say that about our team.

But yeah, Vancouver got a bit of a head start on the Rangers rebuild wise. They've nailed their top picks though.
