That’s a big push of the chips into the middle of the table by Carolina.

They’ve been seemingly hell bent on moving necas for a while now and it’s weird that they decided to do it now.

i meant do what sakic did and move a core piece and extend value rather than self rent

Rantanen has 4th most points in the league over the last 5 seasons.

Who does Drury have to trade that is a core piece and has that much value? Panarin?

I don't know if I don't like Colorado's end of this more than Carolina's. I think Taylor Hall has declined a lot the last 2/3 years. Rantanen's the best player in the deal but Necas is really really good and Jack Drury is probably a solid 2nd liner for years to come. Plus they get a 2nd and a 4th and if you weren't going to re-sign Rantanen anyway you got Necas for one more year and a good 3/4 more years of Drury anyway.

If the Canes get Rantanen to sign that's at least $10.5 and maybe more. They have Aho at 9750, Svechnikov at 7750, Jarvis at 7420, Slavin at 6396. That's about $43 mil tied up in 5 players with Rantanen giving them a team friendly.....which he might not do. They have 13 roster players for next year....a bunch of UFA's probably going out the door and I don't know if their goaltending situation is quite there with Kochetkov. He can be pretty good but he's not going to carry a team and it's best if he has a really D in front of him--something I wouldn't say the Canes have now and it might be worse next year.
Am I missing something with Jack Drury? A solid second liner?

Horrible return. I feel like teams have gotten a 2nd for the 50% retained, and not even when they’re pushing a mega deal across the finish line
Teams usually get a 4th-5th for retaining money in a deal as a 3rd party facilitator iirc.

9 points in 39 games. He's a throw in, lol.

Rantanen is a terrific player. I’m not sure he will be as effective in Carolina as he was in Colorado. Different supporting cast.

I was at the Blackhawks-Vegas game and I watched Taylor Hall closely because I figured he would be on the move this spring. He did score a goal but he was not impressive at all. He went through the motions for most of the game.

Ever hear of selling high?

They couldn't find a taker all summer, then he started off this season like the next Gretzky. Definitely the best time to trade him was now.

Hall has been awful pretty much all season. He was healthy scratched at least once, if not twice. Not sure if he's just been holding back and going through the motions, or still recovering from his injury last year. He had a pretty honest and interesting interview on the Chiclets podcast a few weeks ago. But I honestly think he's pretty cooked. Not sure how Carolina looks at him and his salary and think that's a positive addition to their team.

I don't think not finding a deal to your liking is the same as not finding a taker. The latter isn't true, they could have easily found a taker.

I also don't know that I'd categorize moving him for what very well can be a super rental can be categorized as "selling high." It's brazen, ballsy, a swing for the fences, etc.

Hardly selling high.

Necas right now has the most value he's ever held, would you agree?

That is selling high.

They got Rantanen in return. 4th most in points in the NHL over the last 5 seasons. How much better of a player could they have received in a deal involving Necas?

I wouldn't.

Thus I don't think it is.

I understand how good Rantanen is. He's also a player they very well may not have beyond a few months. Controllable years matter.

The rumor mill has had Necas all over it for a years now. Maximizing his value would have been moving him 2 seasons ago when he had 3 years of RFA control left rather than the 1+ he has right now.

I'm not even knocking the deal from the Canes POV - From what I've been able to gather Necas would have walked away from them as a UFA.

I just think the timing of moving him is a bit weird. He's had a great year and thats obviously not a bad thing, but I'm hard pressed to believe that he wasn't a more valuable asset 2 years ago.

Necas has a career best 1.12 points per game this season. He has another year on his contract at a modest $6.5 million.

He's never had better than .86 points per game in any year prior. Career high of 71 points. Had .68 points per game last season in 77 games.

Please tell me when his value has ever been higher than right now?

See above.

Career year doesn’t mean he’s holding the most value he’s ever had.

Idk why but it just seemed like such a small return to get involved. There’s a restriction on the amount of contracts you can retain on so maybe that has something to with it

This trade is going to make Chris Drury do some extra dumbass shit.
If anything, it should increase the leverage. I know there has been talk about New Jersey and Saint Louis, but the Canes and the Rangers were the top dogs in JT Miller sweepstakes. Now, the Canes are out.

Bold trade for Colorado and Carolina.

I can kind of understand Colorado moving a player they think they can’t re-sign and getting the best haul they can for him.

Carolina feels a little weird though.

Subtracting Necas and Guentzel from the 2024 playoff Canes and adding Rantanen feels like a net weaker playoff team than last season’s. I realize that’s an over-simplification, but it’s the first thing that hit my mind.

Can’t fault Carolina for taking a stab at Rantanen. But it feels like they keep losing major assets for rentals they don’t seem to re-sign or get over the hump with. Where have I seen that?

Who knows, maybe Carolina plans to offer Rantanen a crazy big contract 🤷🏻‍♂️ But that hasn’t been their M.O. and Rantanen looks like he wants to get paid

If Im Carolina I look at it this way,

1. They get a real extended look of around 40 games plus playoffs before deciding what to offer him. That is better than some 20 game rental.

2. They feel this moves gives them a chance to get a Cup this year.
