Even the Sharks you can't take for granted. You have to play hard. I don't know what it is with the Devils. Before the season I thought it was them or Carolina who were going to take the Metro but both teams particularly the Devils have been underachieving. Injuries can change things but I think it's more than that with New Jersey. They just don't seem to have it right now.

Devils aren't much different than Edmonton. If they can manage average+ goaltending and D depth then they will be a true problem. Until then, it shouldn't be a surprise if they have full years where they look amazing and years where they are meh.

I *still* don't want to play that team in the first round again though.

Vally pretty directly saying that the average NHL goalie is not that good right now. Whole thing is worth watching, but he blames guys not getting extended Euro/AHL reps.

The Devils goaltending went back to their mean, and they've had some NY Giants injury luck so far.

Carolina losing Andersen was very impactful, and I don't love what they did with their defense.

I don't really have access to MSG pre/post-game shows, so have not really been exposed to Vally outside the odd intermission and Canadian radio. He's a really smart guy, every time he's on Real Kyper and Bourne you come away knowing something new about the game. I hope to god the Rangers are using his services.

As for the bolded, I would be interested in a broader analysis over different leagues. Is it just the NHL, or is our sport developing to a point where it's harder to be a goalie regardless of the league? Just at a quick glance of Finnish Liiga stats: this season there are 10 goalies with over 0.9 save percentage (teams have played 25-28 games and all goalies in question at least 10). In 2014-2015 it's almost double, 19 goalies had save% over 0.9 (with at least 20 games played).

I think our game is just evolving.

vs SJ 6-3 L

I think the league has been trending this way for awhile. It's just hard to actually have an advantage in goal. At least not one that is worth paying top dollar for.

We had the best goalie in the world two years ago and still almost lost to spicy pork

I kind of want to look into this more tomorrow, but Vally mentions Howard and Crawford. Two guys who were consistently solid, with some great years. Quick and MAF (both in the same category) are the only guys left from that era.
The top end (Hank, Rinne, Price, Luongo, Miller, etc.) got their replacements (Igor and the other Russians, Saros, Hellebuyck). But I don't know how much of the mid-end exists nowadays. I feel like it's all backups forced into a #1 and bad goalies who got nice deals after a strong run.

I don't mind bad goalie play; means more goals, or at least theoretically. Obviously not against the Rangers, but in general, the more goals the better.
