I just looked a David Backes' stat line for Boston. He has played in 14 games, has one goal and two assists.

Has the Backes signing cost someone in Boston's management his job?

The gap between 1 and 2 in the west is as big as the gap between 2 and 11. It’s going to be interesting these next few months.

One point behind the Caps for the Presidents Trophy with equal games played. Blues own The first tie-breaker based on the strength of zero shootout wins vs the Capitals three.

Yeah they did think he would be their miracle cure all didn’t they?

Still in their defense, he is pretty frickin good
He is very good, but from what I have been able to watch, he has to work on his defensive game. I wouldn't be worried if I was a Colorado fan though. He is just young and inexperienced. Makar will be an excellent defenseman.

This is why I cringe when people want to move Dunn. Defensive awareness is something that takes experience. I've seen Dunn make stupid plays and I've seen him flat out shut guys down. When guys are offensively gifted....it takes time for the defense to catch up at the NHL level.

I noticed LAK we’re playing a lot of man to man defending the other day. One other team (maybe it was San Jose) was noticeably doing it recently also. There must be some sound strategic reasoning and expectation for success behind this trend. I actually think the league is probably heading this way. Maybe it’s an incorrect impression, but I think more young coaches are bringing this into the game.

However, I think the Blues are very good at attacking man to man defense. They know how to cycle against it, and they are good at moving the puck into a good shooting area against it. Part of that is the subtle screens/picks they run. They’re not the only team that does that. I also hope the NHL doesn’t try to get those picks out of the game. They don’t need to call penalties or change the rules. Just let it be what it is. It makes the games more exciting and more team skill-based.

We spent a good part of the beginning of last season trying man to man. Put us on last place in the league. Both of those teams are terrible this year so I don’t expect it to catch on.

Agreed. The Blues are good at making teams that play man to man completely lose their coverage leaving Blues players wide open.

Logically man to man just doesn’t make sense to me. How is one guy expected to cover Connor McDavid or Nathan Mackinnon? Like maybe Parayko could do it because he skates so well and had such a crazy reach, but most teams don’t have a freak of nature like him on the backend. It seems like a terrible idea with the exception of 3 on 3 where it’s a bit of a necessity considering all of the ice you’d have to cover in while in zone.

I know there have been coaches in the past that have used their checking center to shadow a star player all game, but it doesn’t seem as common anymore. I don’t remember who it was, but I remember seeing an interview with a checking center who was tasked with covering 99 in a playoff series and his coach told him something to the effect of, “if Gretzky goes to take a leak I expect you to be in the urinal next to him.” I don’t see that happening much anymore. It’s such a tall task to ask one guy to mark star players. You have to check as a team or you’ll get torn apart.

So Columbus scores just over buzzer. They Didnt fix the clock.

He had every right to be upset on this one. Not only would Columbus have won the game if the clock would had been set correctly, but their starting goalie got injured in the shootout that should have never taken place.

Brutal.

The Capitals can have that. I don’t want it lol.
I don’t know...I kinda want it lol. Another banner to raise, home ice throughout the playoffs, which doesn’t seem to matter to this team, but might get Stillman and Co. a couple more games of playoff revenue and allows for people in St. Louis to attend more playoff games. I wouldn’t do anything drastic like playing Petro 30 minutes a night or Binnington on back to back games to win it, but I would still like to see the Blues pull it off.
