Great deal for the Bruins. By comparison, the Devils signed Schneider to a 7 year deal set to begin when he was 29 and end when he was 36, under a $69M cap (that was likely to go up) - that was 8.7% of the cap and by the time it was bought out, it was 7.4%. Swayman's deal starts when he is 25 (he turns 26 next month), under an $88M cap, so he begins at 9.4%, but I think it's quite likely to be around 7.5% by the end, and it ends with him at age 33.

I was never convinced he wouldn’t sign before opening night.

I figured there was a chance he wouldn’t and nothing was guaranteed, but I wasn’t convinced he wouldn’t re-sign by the Bruins first game of the regular season.

After all the denials and acrimony, turns out that $64M number was actually pretty close to accurate.
Eh...
That or they had to up their offer after the agent called them out for lying
I think this was the case, once Neely said that they had no choice but to offer something at or above that. They lowballed him first, no doubt, but he probably asked for a Bob deal or something higher which Boston probably didn't even respond to.
