Back to Dubas, his single biggest issue is one of his own making - Jarry. There was every red flag in the world a GM needed NOT to sign that guy to a 5yr deal at a price that becomes problematic. You could have gone with money or term and probably been okay but he with both and Jarry is turning out to be the exact goalie that made us all weary about signing him in the first place. Dubas tied that anchor to the twilight years of Sid, Geno, and Letang. All of the other moves, sans Karlsson, were arbitrary. He went all in on...Tristan...Jarry. As I said in his signing thread, I have no idea how many times big contracts given out to mediocre goalies becoming absolute anchors has to happen before GMs figure it out and stop doing it.

OMFG. How relatable is this? And he's only getting started Pens fans.
It is interesting that Dubas balked (rightfully) on giving Campbell a 5-year deal. But he walked into the Pittsburgh situation and signed Jarry to that type of deal.

Pittsburgh seems to be in no man's land right now. Realistically, they aren't going to be Cup contenders. Emotionally/sentimentally, they can't/won't trade Crosby, and likely neither of Malkin or Letang either, to get the wheels in motion on a rebuild. And two high picks have already been burned up to get Karlsson for one or two last kick(s) at the can.

Not that Dubas walked into an enviable situation. But I also don't think he helped matters either with his moves in his first off-season since taking over the team.

The goalie market was thin this last offseason. but that doesn’t necessarily mean giving Jarry that deal.
Yup. I kind of get why he re-signed him. But since the market was thin, he had the upper hand. We've seen first hand though Dubas outbidding himself.

Dubas had the upper hand? Isn’t that the opposite when there aren’t many options available to sign?

Regardless he doesn’t deserve more money than Korpisalo got nor does he deserve any more term than Adin Hill got.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. Jarry did.

My thinking was more from the perspective that the goalie carousel is pretty full, and more and more teams are going to the 1A/1B model and away from the traditional #1/2, so Jarry's options were going to eventually be limited, whether via trade or free agency.

He was definitely in a weird spot with that negotiation

Don't 100% know what my decision would have been in that case

The Campbell and Jarry situations being quite different. Dubas would have known Campbell's mental challenges, and wouldn't want to commit for those reasons.

”No matter how low the Penguins sink in the standings this season, I’d be extremely surprised if Sullivan were fired by Kyle Dubas. Ownership is quite enamored with Sullivan. I sense that Dubas holds him in high regard. Crosby, Malkin and Kris Letang have made it very clear that they aren’t interested in playing for any other head coach.”

”Dubas has only so much leverage because of all the no-trade clauses on his roster. Still, if the Penguins have a bad trip in California, I have to think a move from Dubas is a possibility. He can’t let this go on for much longer. It’s early, sure. But this team would appear to be in serious trouble. There isn’t just one problem. And that is the biggest problem of all.”

There are certainly valid criticisms of Jarry, but I'm not sure how he wouldn't be expected to get more money/term than a career backup goalie and a career tandem goalie with chronic injury concerns, who both have worse stats.

I can't help but laugh when I see the Eastern Conference standings and how the incompetence of that clueless GM :dunce:of theirs is finally be exposed for the fraud that he is.

Last in the East with Crosby. Malkin, Letang and Karlsson..

Leaf Nation is finally starting to see what others knew for years.

Boy Wonder’s going to find out that this ownership group won’t tolerate incompetence like his last gig’s ownership did……..

Really thought that the Jarry extension and the Karlsson signings would put them over the top for years to come.
