Classic Lou, though.

He's so slow and stubborn. Loses out on the player he seemingly wanted.

The Islanders have signed ONE UFA this off-season, one! And it was an undrafted 28yo with no prior experience in the NHL from their AHL team.
They extended Parise, Clutterbuck, Aho, Hutton, Appleby, and Andreoff before they could become UFAs, re-signed RFAs Koivula and Salo, and signed ELCs for Ishakov and Dufour, and there was the Romanov trade.
The Kubiak deal was done early July, but technically not registered until free agency opened July 13 and then he gave out another ELC to Odelius July 15; he has done literally nothing else since Free Agency opened.

Perhaps he didn't really want him?

I like this move alot for the Flames. They got older, but Huberdeau and Kadri replacing Gudreau and Tkachuk isn't the worst thing in the world considering the position they were put in. Plus Weegar, first, and a prospect.

Damn, Montreal with a good trade there ..Flames just didn't care about the cost to get rid of Monahan.

Hate it when div rivals make good moves. Then again when you're that bad you can take on that deal in a pinch.

Need to know the cost of moving Monahan, to know total cost.

If rumoured 1st., then take the 1st. out of the gain department.

Good point! I'm just catching up at work and didn't see the Monahan news.

Effectively trading:

Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Monahan, 1st

For

Huberdeau, Weegar, Kadri, 1st, prospect

All seems like a new gain.

I imagine flames ownership wasn’t in a rebuild mode so Trevilling did well to ensure his team can compete now.

Looks better if they can retain Weegar.

Definitely a shortened window but Markstrom is also getting older and so are other pieces on the roster.

Should be fun to see how this team looks under Sutter but I’m glad I’m not a flames fan first

I also don’t think, if you mentioned 3 years ago, that the flames wouldn’t have any of those three players on their roster at this time that no would believe you and people would suggest they went scorched earth

I should add that by adding Kadri, with their D core and goaltending, that should put Calgary back as division favourites.

Maybe not as good as last year but I think they’ll be better than Edmonton.

If the Leafs finished 20th, traded their 13th pick, and proceeded to effectively not make a single move in the summer, this forum would be on fire.

Lou is having quite the summer vacation

I mean he needs to do something. But that Isles team was a lot better in the second half once they got past COVID and that road trip to start their season. I think they can still be a top 3 team in theory within that division.

Still, during Trotz might be Lou’s downfall. A new coach might show how much of the Isles success was due to Trotz’s team defense with an average roster with good goaltending.

And Lou didn’t upgrade the offensenup front.

Folks this Monahan trade might have the most complex set of conditions on a draft pick we've ever seen.

Remember that Calgary obtain Florida's 2025 1st (conditionally) in the Tkachuk trade. Per CapFriendly:

2025 1st round pick (CGY) [Conditional]*
*Conditions:
1. If CGY’s 2024 1st round pick is between 20 and 32, MTL can take that pick instead. Result: TBD

Scenario: In the event CGY receives FLA’s 2025 1st round pick:
1. If both CGY AND FLA’s picks are NOT top 10, MTL will receive the better of the CGY and FLA 2025 1st round picks. Result: TBD

2. If CGY’s pick is top 10, AND FLA’s pick is NOT top 10, MTL receives FLA’s pick. Result: TBD

Scenario: In the event CGY does NOT receive FLA’s 1st round pick:

Sub-scenario: CGY’s pick is NOT top 10
1. MTL will receive the CGY pick, and
2. If FLA’s pick is not top 10, is a better pick than CGY’s, and was transferred to another team due to prior conditions, MTL will also receive CGY’s 2024 4th round pick.
Result: TBD

Sub-scenario: CGY’s pick is top 10:
1. If CGY’s pick is 1st overall, MTL will receive CGY’s 2025 3rd, and the better of CGY and FLA’s 2026 1st round pick. Result: TBD
2. If CGY’s pick is 2nd to 10th, MTL receives CGY’s 2025 1st round pick. Result: TBD

The Monahan-to-MTL trade looks awfully similar to the Marleau-to-CAR trade. More upside for Montréal obviously, but similar dollars and term going out. Calgary clearly views it as a pure cap dump.

As for Naz, not sure I'd want him making $7M at 38yo, but happy that he got that contract. It is well deserved, especially as he hasn't really had a big contract yet despite being a good player for a number of years.

I'll buck the trend and predict Calgary will be considerably worse next year, even with their acquisitions. Kadri v. McDavid, however, should be much-watch TV.
