Does anyone actually think they’re missing the playoffs?

I think most people think the Panthers are notably worse right now but I'm not sure many think they're 35pts worse.
Someone in this thread said exactly that, which prompted my original post. Who knows if they actually believe it.

It sounds a bit like sour grapes to me:

"We should trade for Tkachuk!" "Tkachuk would put us over the top!" "Tkachuk is the player we need!"

"Tkachuk was traded to Florida? They're screwed. Won't even make the playoffs."

Though it matters what goes the other way in the final trade, no?

I mean a lot of folks here likely would have traded Nylander 1 for 1 for the guy. Moving Marner + Sandin + 1st for him probably would be a different reaction ect

Just a quick reminder. Up until the 2021-22 season when both Tkachuk and Nylander had breakout seasons, their career production was pretty similar:

Regular Season (Excluding 2021-22)

Matthew Tkachuk 349 GP 278 PTS 0.79 PPG
William Nylander 358 GP 263 PTS 0.73 PPG

The other thing that gets lost in the shuffle is Tkachuk is especially bad in the playoffs.

Playoffs (Including 2021-22)

Matthew Tkachuk 27 GP 15 PTS 0.55 PPG
William Nylander 39 GP 30 PTS 0.76 PPG

Florida didn't get young Eric Lindros here.

What I'm interested in is who is the setup guy in Florida.
Last year it was Huberdeau.
For Tkachuk it was Gaudreau.

Wonder if Panthers would do Barkov and 2026 1st. for marner? j/k

Dom at The Athletic just put out his list for the worst contracts in hockey:

1. Seguin
2. Jones
3. Skinner
4. Vlasic
5. Nurse
6. Parayko
7. Karlsson
8. Werenski
9. Suzuki
10. Chiarot

Lots of Dmen and some suprises. What do you guys think?

Interesting with parayko and werenski

Werenski will be gold in a couple years when columbus rounds out.. and now he has a great transition winger to work with

Weird no bobrovsky or benn

No Bobrovsky is a bad miss.

Parayko is a weird inclusion.

I’d consider all of OEL, Eichel, Sergachev, Price, Weber, Letang, Hayes, Gallagher, Anderson, Doughty, Grubauer, Johansen, Duchene, Spurgeon, Trouba, Hamilton, Coleman, Copp, Lee, Gibson in that area

Definitely weird. Benn only has 3 years of term but that's still pretty terrible at 9.5. Dom's model must value him more than the eye test.

Yea, I think term plays a pretty big role for the list.

For Parayko, he reasons just how badly his defensive numbers have slipped the last two seasons while not being a great offensive D on a contract that lasts forever.

It may be a matter of supporting cast for a few of these guys though.

I see parayko having a better year now that faulk has solidified his role as the main two way offensive guy

And leddy needs to be paired with parayko

I'm assuming Dom's lists don't include goalies at all.

Benn wouldn't be much below the top 10 worst contracts but he comes in as marginally more valuable than most of the names in the top 10 and with a shorter contract too.

The 10th worst contract he has there is Chiarot at -$16.2m value.

Eyeballing Benn's number last year and he was about -$4.5m just for last year. You project a bit worse the next 3yrs and he probably comes in right around -$15-16m right behind Chiarot.

Term is probably the only reason Benn isnt on the list for sure.

From the player cards:

Seguin:
Salary: 9.9
Market value: 4.2

Benn:
Salary: 9.5
Market value: 5.0

Both are horrific for the cap hit and on the same team too.

Leafs big four just for fun:

Matthews:
Salary: 11.6
Market value: 22.3

Tavares:
Salary: 11.0
Market value: 11.6

Marner:
Salary: 10.9
Market value: 17.5

Nylander:
Salary: 7
Market value: 9.8

Barkov is also an excellent, excellent playmaker.

And usually was driving his own line with lesser players.

So they are now a one line team if Barkov is going to be feeding Tkachuk.

If Barkov was his own line, then Huberdeau was the other.

Tkachuk to have the same sort of set-ups in Florida will be playing with someone not in (Huberdeau, Gaudreau).

Maybe they can sign Kadri to a big deal and spend half the cap on a few forwards. I hear it’s a solid plan.

Looks like a potential setup for a regression of offense from Tkachuk
It is possible and is Florida really better if Tkachuk scores +100p with Barkov, but they don't have talent like Huberdeau in second line. Last season their offense was their secret and now they gave up perfect line driver and also lost good transition defender, that could boost offense behind second or even sometimes third line.

This is actually backward move of us trading Tavares for two different player on same cap hit. Florida traded two core pieces for one more expensive core piece. They allocate cap like us and it has been point of discussion here that we should trade away one forward for cap space that we could utilize no matter how, but it would be better than having all four here.

So who is in on Toews?

He wants out.

What and where makes sense?

He owed 2.9 cash for this year, retention for the Hawks shouldn't be an issue.

So while 5mm cap hit is probably too much for 34 year old Toews, the cash is low.

Just throwing out but would someone and would he be interested in an extension at an appropriate rate?

Double retention of Toews brings his cap hit to 2.6?👀👀

Seems like an expensive double retention candidate

My guess is Edmonton.

I have always absolutely hated Toews, and certainly want nothing to do with him now when he is a trash player.
