It sounds a bit like sour grapes to me:

"We should trade for Tkachuk!" "Tkachuk would put us over the top!" "Tkachuk is the player we need!"

"Tkachuk was traded to Florida? They're screwed. Won't even make the playoffs."

Well let's say you lose your second best forward and dman in that trade to acquire your new second best forward and you lose also assets that could help you to fix your defense. It can be seen as loss short term.

If we trade Marner and Brodie for Tkachuk we won't be over the top near future.

More than likely different people making different claims.

and they won't walk for nothing anyway. If Calgary knows that they can't extend them, they'll probably move them at the deadline for further assets. They could walk away with three 1st round picks out of this.
Agreed. No matter how one looks at it, Calgary did well. There is also the possibility of resigning one or both too.

While both players are a year away from unrestricted free agency, Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar said Monday they're open to signing long-term deals with the Calgary Flames.
"
I'm open to staying in Calgary for a long time," Huberdeau said as the two players were introduced on a Zoom call Monday.

"Open to signing a long-term deal," added Weegar. "...Looking forward to my agent talking to Brad."

I wouldn't disagree with either of you, but it does sound a bit like sour grapes.

I would have loved Tkachuk here but Florida did pay a pretty heavy price.
I would have had no issues with the Leafs paying a similar price.

It could have been franchise altering move and I think we would have had assets to do it, but it would have cost either Marner or better futures, since I don't think Brodie has same value as Weegar with his contract and Huberdeau is better than Nylander.

Bit like, but mostly because I don't understand what Florida is doing. Are they playing short or long game, since at the moment it seems like they splurge futures like they're going for the cup run, but Tkachuk move is more long term, since their team next year is worst than it was with Weegar and Huberdeau.

Florida's D next year.. so far.

Forsling - Ekblad
Carlsson - Montour
Staal - Gudas
Sjalin

I mean, Yikes!

I know, it's like our defense 2020 before we traded Marleau, but they don't have any marleaus to trade or any assets to attach to him.

25% short 75% long

I am sure they are looking at it more do that they have 4 of their 6 D returning next year

Forsling with ekblad or montour but their entire right side is returning. Probably banking on a cheap third pair rotation of staal and young guy and only 2nd pair left is needed

Or stable defensive cheap vet to play with ekblad and your 2nd pair is forsling/montour

Lots of ways to justify it trying to be objective. I'm sure they understand the last hurdle to overcome and clearing a bit of money and then whatever is left they need to get creative for a year and then reassess

Like anything, you have to look at the price tag. Would you have been willing to move a 115 point scorer, number 2 defenseman and a 1st and marginal prospect for Tkachuk?

I dont think "point totals" carry the weight they used to as the game has changed and opened up

I think things like character, style, and consistency to system become more important

Connor Brown and Jack Campbell to Edmonton in one day. I wonder if they’ll try to bring in JVR-Kessel-Bozak to complete their collection of ex-Leafs.
EDIT: Nevermind. Your post is from July 13. I thought I was quoting a new post lol

holy Brown got traded to edmonton? when did this happen? I thought he was traded to the capitals

Which is my point. If we should be willing to pay that much, why should people think Florida suddenly won't make the playoffs because they did?

Personally I think Florida overpaid a bit, and Tkachuk doesn't address our biggest problem, which is at 2C.

He was rumoured to being moved to Edmonton, it was said to almost be a done deal... then he was dealt to the Capitals.

They won't have the cap room for any additions. Their D is going to be what it is at this point.

Carlsson - Montour
Staal - Gudas

Does anyone actually think they’re missing the playoffs?

I think most people think the Panthers are notably worse right now but I'm not sure many think they're 35pts worse.

Unless they make some luck happen

Duclair ltir
Hornqvist moved
Add something else cheap and worry later

Now is the time more than ever to really see what you got for young defencemen

For sure Duclair goes to LTIR.

Hornqvist... I mean, that might not be the easiest contract to move. 28 points last year, with a $5.3 mil contract.. no firsts to attach until 2026, and only a second this year, and a third next year in the first three rounds.

They would need to add a player to him i would think

They could also realize they are stuck with bobrovsky and move knight in a half hockey half money trade

They don't need to be 35 points worse. The last qualifier in the NHL, had 97 points last year... so they need to be 25 points worse. Their offense isn't as good, and their defense is currently a disaster. They still have time to try and make changes, and maybe they will, but this division just become a lot more competitive in the middle.

I suppose that they could add a player... like Knight perhaps even.... But moving Knight on his own, and it doesn't save them in cap. He's only on $925k, and they'd need some backup.

Other than Knight, I mean would they attach Lundell? No matter what they do, I don't see net improvements by shuffling deck chairs.

I think if there was a Venn diagram of people who wanted to trade for Tkachuk, and people who think that trade was bad for Florida, there would be very, very little overlap.

I would rather add some size and strength to our depth rather than overpay for a guy who also doesn't really do much in the playoffs.

I get that Florida didn't want to re-sign an aging Hubes, but that deal is still crazy to me, and I think they will be a significant step below last year. Marchment, Weegar, Huberdeau and now they still need to shed 3m to be compliant, and the only add is Tkachuk who has had 1 year producing in the same range as Hubes.

Depends on what other teams like on their farms

But yeah knight added to make that deal mutually beneficial.. who could get enticed to have their potential long term solution in net?

San jose, arizona, montreal?..new jersey?

If you resign to the fact you and bobrovsky are married for the next 2 to 3 years you would need to explore this
