According to Eric Francis, he submitted a five team list, two of the teams couldnt make it work, leaving Calgary with just three options. Luckily Florida came through.
He signed the extension, so obviously he wanted to go there.

right, but Calgary had no obligation to follow the list, that was just Calgary being nice and asking for his input to facilitate a trade. But Tkachuk is an RFA, he has no contract so therefore no formal list Calgary had to abide by

Then again what team would give up big value for a guy who doesn't want to sign with them long term?

No one would trade for him if they couldn’t sign him to an extension.

on the bright side we wil get to brother on brother violence chucky losing his shit after muzzin torments him, not to mention what he's going to do after marchand and the rest of the eastern pests dig in to there new meat.

i think calgary re signs both they have a ton of cap. i think they take this personally and dont miss a beat next season. i think when they return its going to mimic the first game against nyi with jt the fans are going to be ruthless and rightfully so

oh but i forgot hubs dubois and every other francophone will be signing with the habs next season.

How much of a win for Calgary will it be when both Huberdeau and Weegar walk after the 2022-23?

That will be bad asset management since Calgary should know by the deadline if they want to re-sign there or not .. And if not, they should trade them.

It's a win if either (or both re-sign) .. and it's a win if they are able to parlay either (or both) for picks/prospects to start a rebuild.

Also Tkachuk wasn't going to sign long term .. which is important.

Calgary did a great job of kicking the issue down the line and making enough of a splash as to over shadow the big "Canadian crisis" talking points.

Well considering they lost Gaudreau and were gonna lose Tkachuk anyways I'd say they still won. They get another year minimum where they can compete and they got a 1st round pick from a team that might even struggle to make the playoffs. Even if Calgary under performs next season they'll have 2 hot trade chips at the deadline that every contender will want on their roster.

Wasn’t he free to talk to teams on July 13?
Can he talk once arbitration is elected?

I don't know if it was the right decision, but I do appreciate Flordia being willing to make hard decisions and not just sit back and hope things magically work out.
I don’t believe Florida is as good as they were at the beginning of last season, but Tkachuk is one of the top players in the game at both ends of the rink.

Depends if they walk on calgary or a team that calgary traded them too.

Both those guys easily return 1sts with Huberdeau also likely getting a nice blue chip prospect too. The entire package could end up being 3 - 4 1st rounders of value depending on which direction Calgary goes in

Tkchuk was only a 1 year player for the Flames regardless.
Huberdeau is only a 1 year player if nothing is done.

So that's a break even.

Weeger for 1 year or for trade is an extra.
A prospect they received is an extra.
A 1st. round pick is an extra.

If Huberdeau signs an extension, that is a minor extra as he'd have been available next summer as UFA. So really signing an extension has equal value as signing an UFA using the Tkachuk cap space.

Hard to argue that Calgary did badly on this deal given the circumstances.
What they do with the haul will determine *how* well they did.

They just made several very questionable decisions in succession. Seems like decisions best not made. Time will tell.

A much bigger win than Tkachuk leaving for nothing after 2022-23. Still have the 1st and the prospect that they otherwise wouldn't have had.

and they won't walk for nothing anyway. If Calgary knows that they can't extend them, they'll probably move them at the deadline for further assets. They could walk away with three 1st round picks out of this.

I doubt they would move them if they are looking at a playoff run.
