Potentially some short term pain for long term gain in this trade for Florida. Interested to see which direction Calgary takes going forward.

I don't think Calgary knows lol.

They probably try and be competitive again another season then maybe go the rebuild route if it flops

I wonder if they talked extension?

Maybe kadri goes there now?
A number of questions here that will need to be answered at some point for Calgary. A couple of expiring contracts instrumental for a rebuild? A "two players are better than one" push for this season? Retaining one or both new Flames over the long haul? Fascinating stuff. This trade being a potential domino for a Kadri signing (somewhere) should absolutely make for a point of interest too.

Can't rule that out. Decent reward, at least based on their regular season finish, but quite the sizable risk to go along with it too IMO.

Calgary gets backed into a corner being forced to trade Tkachuk, and they walk away with that? Never would I have thought they'd get a guy like Huberdeau in a deal, let alone those extra pieces.

Extremely well done by them. Much needed after losing Gaudreau.

Is it just me or did the Flames actually got better with the Tkachuk trade. And they actually have the cap space to sign Hubes and Weegar
Couldn't say that I expected them to acquire two players of this calibre (was thinking a 1st, top prospect and a player (forward?) closer to a Weegar than a Huberdeau). Seems to be a great trade for Calgary if they can also at least re-sign Huberdeau (although re-signing only Weegar would be something positive too). Conversely, the picture looks a lot less rosy if Calgary has to either trade both or watch them walk.

Only problem is that they have burned so much futures in this build that I don't know how they reload or retool for long term gain, if this doesn't succeed.

9.5m for Tkachuk in Florida too, a state with no personal income tax. Seems a bit rich for one really good season that was tied to another player having an even better season. Odd move for Florida, imo they're a much worse team coming into next year on paper, and this is after a season I think they already kinda over preformed in.

Seems like a win-win lose-lose

Calgary gets the better player and combination of value, but limited term can mean they walk for nothing.

Florida got much worse in their contending window, capped out, lost their depth and have awful D but they got the younger elite talent signed long term.

Other teams often get better when they trade a "star" player. We're too scared to try it though.

We just want to trade Holl and Kerfoot every summer.

Another thing I've noticed is other teams generally do OK when their hands are tied. With us it's simply "our hands were tied".

I love Tkachuk, but Huberdeau was top 5 in the Hart voting. I also wonder why he had Florida on his trade list. That decision doesnt scream hockey related.

Tkachuk doesn’t have an NTC, Calgary didn’t have an obligation to trade him to his preferred destination. It looks like they traded him for the best available package.

I think that’s a false premise, I don’t think teams get better by trading a star player. Teams get better if they trade a star player for another star player. Those types of trades don’t happen often.

According to Eric Francis, he submitted a five team list, two of the teams couldnt make it work, leaving Calgary with just three options. Luckily Florida came through.
He signed the extension, so obviously he wanted to go there.

You are not wrong. But sometimes a team needs a different type of star. Matthew Tkachuck is a star and a very rare type of player that can score hit and fight(once in a while)

Having Houb hasn't amounted to much success for Florida and that's not his fault. So maybe try a different look. Especially his contract is expiring and you have an upcoming star in Lundell

Good on Florida to cut emotional tides and try something vastly different. Tkachuck is only 24. He still has room to grow
