The performance bonuses for this season are not officially factored in until after the regular season is completed. At that point, any performance bonuses earned are added to the final cap hit number for the season, and the amount that total is over $82.5M is the bonus carryover overage for next year. A GM may choose to create some space during the year so that when that end of season calculation happens, the bonuses earned do not put the total over the $82.5M cap.

They might be able to pay some of it this year.

I can not rule out cap magic and the possibility some of it if not all will be paid this year. Something like paying the bonus while having Hall on LTIR or some other loophole.

But let's assume they will carry over 4.5, this is considered performance bonus overage - can they bury it again under 7.5% performance bonus cushion for next year ?

My understanding was that they can "defer" it one more time as long as the total amount of bonuses owed don't exceed 7.5%, previous years+ current season.

You can NOT go on LTIR and have bonus payments paid this year.

To be fair i don’t know that they had 0 space from day 1… I didn’t look into it… so they may have had some space at the beginning of the year to have some of it off? I’m sure that would be

You are just making up loopholes that don’t exist. Here is what we know

1.) teams can in certain situations allow for performance bonuses. Because the player is not gauranteed to hit those… a team can temporarily go over the cap (including bonuses) because otherwise they can’t spend to the cap if the player doesn’t hit. Like when rookies have performance bonuses we didn’t have to allot 3.5 for Matthews in his rookie year

They limit the amount you are allowed to go over with bonuses so teams don’t offer way too much and create super teams

2.) IF the player hits the bonuses and the team has left space… it gets paid out that year if not it gets applied to the next year. Now I’m pretty sure that you can’t just pay half this year… I think it is an all or nothing thing…. But I don’t know that

3.) you can NOT go into a LTIR to pay bonuses. You don’t accrue cap space in LTIR

4.) Boston starter the year with Mac/marchand and others On LTIR so we know they couldn’t accrue at the start of the year. They buried salary and had to get retention etc and put hall on LTIR

So we know they have spent big chunks of the year in LTIR not accruing space to pay bonuses. In theory maybe somewhere in there they were able to send a bunch of people down etc to get some space?

But they have 4.5 million in bonuses they owe for this year. Everything I have seen says that a large portion probably all gets out to next year.

This is with Boston buying out Mike Reilly (just under 400k in dead cap but they save almost 1.5 mill vs. burying him), Krejci and Bergeron having the same base cap as this year but I added their full performance bonuses from this year since that should be an overage, and nobody else being signed including Frederic and Swayman.

5 spots to fill with 820k on average to spend per position. No matter what, you are looking at least one guy going out to make the lineup work... And that is if you cheap out on pretty much every open spot at the same time.

It is pretty dire for Boston. They'll probably work it out, but they are looking at dumping salary or hoping for more than a 1 mill cap raise to make it work.
Boston, win the Cup and then go full rebuild.

Interesting to see people spinning the Horvat drop in production into "he's on a team now which values defence much more"....but when you look at the stats, Vancouver is actually giving up fewer chances and shots against. The difference is they just have a Vezina guy keeping them in games.

That Horvat trade and contract looking a bit anchorish at the moment. I might get to see them live in a couple weeks so I'd like to see him up close and see how he looks.

I would argue that his drop in production is more in line with NY doesn't have a Petey, Hughes, Miller, Kuzmenko to play with.

Even when Van was terrible they had no problem scoring.

It's 100% this, but you would still think an 8mx8 player would be able to generate more offence than he is on his own. NYI still has some weapons, especially on the back end. Maybe playing with Barzal (or Engvall lol) will pump the numbers. He's on pace for like 40 points with the Isles right now, and his defensive numbers are lacking.

Honestly, I don't know what to think of him or that trade in general.

I am all in favour of paying RFA's more money trying to predict what they will become rather than paying UFA's for what they have done.

8x8 does seem like a risk for Horvat. I think he can be a 30 goal guy but he has never been a PPG guy.

I hope it works out. I have always liked him

I think horvat would have been a contributor to the new system under tocchet just fine .. i think the numbers improve with or without him

BUT.. miller was forecasted as a center to begin with and Bo was not worth his price on a new deal to be a third line center

Having watched him since he arrived this production isnt surprising - he needs someone to drive and make plays for him to get his points and his defensive game always felt overrated

He is in no mans land right now without someone feeding him pucks

Part of it too is that his Barzal replacement are guys who are not very good. Holmstrom, Fasching, Bailey... they aren't doing much.

f***in Islanders screwing up Horvat for my fantasy team lol was so annoyed they were the team trading for him. f*** defense z score goals ya fool! Haha
*It's ok, I still made it to the final 4* win then it's finals next week!!
Think that's bad, I lost the Finals last year because all of my best players were getting rested the final week of the season.

Not sure do you guys noticed this stats but before Horvat was traded, there was this stats about tip in goals for Horvat Vs the rest of the league and it was like Horvat tip in goals % was 15% higher than the next player and close to 30% higher than the league average. Everyone expected that % to drop.
Also, Horvat was cherry picking a lot this season bc he knows goals means payday

LOL, I got Horvat too but his stats tanked since he joined the Isles. f***ing Isles, man. I am still in the final 4 myself, but I wish Horvat would start producing soon lol.
