The performance bonuses for this season are not officially factored in until after the regular season is completed. At that point, any performance bonuses earned are added to the final cap hit number for the season, and the amount that total is over $82.5M is the bonus carryover overage for next year. A GM may choose to create some space during the year so that when that end of season calculation happens, the bonuses earned do not put the total over the $82.5M cap.
They might be able to pay some of it this year.
I can not rule out cap magic and the possibility some of it if not all will be paid this year. Something like paying the bonus while having Hall on LTIR or some other loophole.
But let's assume they will carry over 4.5, this is considered performance bonus overage - can they bury it again under 7.5% performance bonus cushion for next year ?
My understanding was that they can "defer" it one more time as long as the total amount of bonuses owed don't exceed 7.5%, previous years+ current season.
You can NOT go on LTIR and have bonus payments paid this year.
To be fair i don’t know that they had 0 space from day 1… I didn’t look into it… so they may have had some space at the beginning of the year to have some of it off? I’m sure that would be

You are just making up loopholes that don’t exist. Here is what we know
1.) teams can in certain situations allow for performance bonuses. Because the player is not gauranteed to hit those… a team can temporarily go over the cap (including bonuses) because otherwise they can’t spend to the cap if the player doesn’t hit. Like when rookies have performance bonuses we didn’t have to allot 3.5 for Matthews in his rookie year
They limit the amount you are allowed to go over with bonuses so teams don’t offer way too much and create super teams
2.) IF the player hits the bonuses and the team has left space… it gets paid out that year if not it gets applied to the next year. Now I’m pretty sure that you can’t just pay half this year… I think it is an all or nothing thing…. But I don’t know that
3.) you can NOT go into a LTIR to pay bonuses. You don’t accrue cap space in LTIR
4.) Boston starter the year with Mac/marchand and others On LTIR so we know they couldn’t accrue at the start of the year. They buried salary and had to get retention etc and put hall on LTIR
So we know they have spent big chunks of the year in LTIR not accruing space to pay bonuses. In theory maybe somewhere in there they were able to send a bunch of people down etc to get some space?
But they have 4.5 million in bonuses they owe for this year. Everything I have seen says that a large portion probably all gets out to next year.
