Tonight is another example that Boston can play any style of hockey and find a way to win. That is a key element to a complete team, and a team that can go deep in the playoffs.

They can win 2-1 in a tight defensive game.

They can win 6-5 in a barn burner.

They’re never out of their comfort zone in any situation.

I mean... We beat Boston in a 2-1 game earlier this year.

We have also won our fair share of barn burners.

The main difference between us and the rest of the league is we suck against basement level teams. We are probably 2nd in the NHL right now if we didn't have a losing record against some of the worst teams out there.

One other thing to note as well:

Leafs have had a 3rd stringer (Woll/Kallgren) start 11 games this year. Boston has only started a 3rd string (Kinkaid) 1 time. Kinkaid won. Tampa and the Rangers haven't had a 3rd string start all year, and both are behind us in the standings.

Our 3rd stringer record: 4-3-4 (.545 PT%)
Samsonov/Murray combined: 31-12-4 (.702 PT%).

I have a lot more confidence in Woll as our 3rd stringer (even though he is 1-1) than Kallgren going forward, so we may be able to snatch a few more wins and improve our percentage even if Murray doesn't come back.

It sucks but we all knew Boston would make a move, right? I hate rentals in principle but if they ever make sense, IMO it's when your window is closing, and especially if you're favored to win anyway. That's exactly what Boston is, except I'm beginning to wonder if the window will ever close for those f***ers, what a nightmare that team is.

Everyone that predicted Boston would miss the playoffs raise your hand. And then get out of my sight.

/endrant

Look at their track record with rentals...Lindholm, Zacha,Hall..hell you can add Foligno we paid for with 1st rounder if the picture is not clear.

These rentals tend to stay in Boston on reasonable contracts...

I didn't think they'd miss the playoffs, but I did think they'd struggle out of the gate, with all of the injuries that they had.

I don't blame them for going all in this season, but I do think this is their last season competing at this level. They've got 13 players signed for next year, with $61,662,500 plus $4.5 mil in performance bonuses from this year.... so $66.2. If Pastranak signs for $11 mil, that's $77.2, in a cap world of $83.5... and a need to sign 7-9 players for a roster... so everyone else is league minimum. I suppose it's feasible to performance bonus everyone, and have one more go.. but it seems doubtful to me.

They've got one heck of a team this year though.

Adding Orlov and Hathaway makes them even harder to play against.

Was zacha a rental? I’m pretty sure lindholm signed right away.

And foligno was a ufa

Speaking of Zacha, New Jersey and Boston:

What if Boston had hit on those?

Out of 4 top 15 picks 1 hit.

Remember the summer of 2022 when we were told that Calgary's recovery moves were genius?

Given the cards handed to them, they were pretty good moves. But Markstrom at .889 SV % and they are toast. Last year he was 0.922... He repeats that, and he gives up 31 less goals so far this year... They would likely be a leader in the West... it almost purely comes down to goaltending for them... it can make, or break you.

Man.. our 2018-2019 forward group was stacked. Just sad that the core was too young - this roster would wreck havoc in the league today..

Matthews
Nylander
Marner
Tavares
Kadri
Hyman
Brown
Moore

We also had the good versions of AJ and Kapanen before they fell off. Things may have been different if Babs hadn't been around..

Not sure if it was Babs, our roster was really young and our D sucked other than Rielly/Muzzin
